This meter is triggered when you attempt to land a dunk in a contest, and there’s a green window (which guarantees you success every time). It’s a tool used heavily by both casuals and esports pros, which is why mastering it should be your top priority. However, the game could do a better job of explaining this tool and how it works.
How to use the dunk meter in NBA 2K24
Many players often get confused as they think that the dunk meter, like the shot meter or layup meter, can be activated. This meter is always active by default, irrespective of whether you’re on current-gen (Xbox Series XlS and PS5) or old-gen (PC and old-gen consoles).
There are several types of dunks available in NBA 2K24, and the dunk meter is used with skill dunks. When you perform a skill dunk, the meter will automatically appear on your screen along with the green window. Here are the controls for performing skill dunks:
- Keep the R2/RT button pressed.
- As you approach the basket, flick the RS up and then down for the meter to appear.
- Leave the RS when the meter is in the green zone.
If you complete all three steps, there will be guaranteed dunks every time without failure.
When to use the dunk meter in NBA 2K24
Overdoing skill dunks will lead to turnovers, so it’s important to understand when to perform them. Typically, I observe whether my player is being guarded. If your player has an open run to the basket, the dunk meter will have a huge green window (making it easy to score). It doesn’t matter if your opponent tries to defend your player after the meter has been triggered.
In fact, this is the biggest difference between the dunk meter and other such meters in NBA 2K24 – the green window of a dunk meter doesn’t change once it has been activated. Just make sure you’re not surrounded while attempting to land a dunk. While you will still trigger the meter, the green window on it will be practically non-existent.
