How to save Malcolm in Dragon’s Dogma 2’s The Heel of History quest

There’s good potential that you got stuck finding a room with a lot of books in The Caged Magistrate quest of Dragon’s Dogma 2. Brant will tell you to find Kendrick of The Gracious Hand, and that will lead you to “The Heel of History,” a necessary quest to complete The Caged Magistrate.

Kendrick stands out front of The Gracious Hand which is located in Vernworth’s Slums District in the southeast corner of the city. When you talk to him, he’ll tell you about a missing boy named Malcolm but won’t say much more. You’ll need to dig up some information on your own.

To find out where Malcolm is, you need to speak to three children in the immediate vicinity. More specifically, if you walk east down the road to the coast, you’ll find the among the ruins, with one of them being inside The Gracious Hand itself. They will tell you that Malcolm was last seen digging through some ruins and had told them he found something.

Take this information back to Kendrick. He will know exactly the ruins the children are talking about. He’ll head southwest for a few paces, then open the way to The Gracious Hand’s Vaults.

The vaults are pretty straightforward. There’s a door early on that can’t be opened from your side but will act as a shortcut back. One of the halls is caved in. If you are playing a Mage or Sorcerer that can levitate, you can cut some time off your journey by just crossing the gap through that method. If you have to drop down into the catacombs, it doesn’t make much difference. Hang a left and climb some stairs, and you’ll meet where the hallway leads.

A shortways from there, you’ll find Malcolm who will excitedly tell you of his find. Follow him up a ramp and climb another caved in floor. There aren’t many enemies here, but watch out for bats and small spiders.

Up another set of stairs, you’ll find the archives, which triggers a cutscene that ends the sidequest. You’re left to find your way out on your own, but before you do, consider searching the archives. You’ll discover some tomes, and even if you don’t use them, they’re worth a decent amount when you sell them.

Once you’ve completed the Heel of History, you can finish The Caged Magistrate quest. Check back after some time has passed from when you free the Magistrate. If you go back to the archive, you will find Waldhar there. He will give you a quest to recover his glasses, “A Magisterial Amenity.”
