Grab your welder's mask

Your wit and skills are some of the only things that will get you through the terrors of the zombie apocalypse in Project Zomboid. Crafting skills are particularly useful, since using them you’ll be able to farm, cook, and more.

Metalworking is one of the more difficult skills to level if you don’t know what you’re doing. If you’re in need of help getting your Metalworking skill leveled up in Project Zomboid, here are some things you should do.

How to gain XP in Metalworking in Project Zomboid

The best way to earn experience and level up the Metalworking skill fast is to dismantle various metal objects that you find. This includes anything mechanical, such as stoves, microwaves, sinks, fridges, bathtubs, and more.

You can even dismantle items like dumpsters and chain link fences, so long as they are made out of metal. Anything that you can break down by dismantling will give you the XP you need.

Your best bet is to find a well-off neighborhood that you can ransack for experience. Find some nice houses filled with appliances and go to town dismantling everything that you can find. This will net you plenty of experience if you dismantle the kitchens and bathrooms.

If you’re on the road, try dismantling car wrecks that you come across. Junkyards are also a good spot to farm XP.

Be sure that you also have the Metalworking skill books so that you have a multiplier on your XP. This will help you level up much faster than without it. You can find skill books in bookcases scattered around.

When you’re using skill books, be aware that you can’t read the skill book if it’s above your current level. So, if you’re level one at Metalworking, you can use the level two book to multiply your XP.

How to use the metalworking skill in Project Zomboid

The Metalworking skill lets you craft items made out of metal, such as chain link fences, metal barricades, and other various metal wares. Sadly, the skill is not as highly sought after as something like carpentry, due to the small amount of items you can make with the skill.

However, that doesn’t mean it’s completely useless. Metal walls, fences, and furniture are much more durable than their wooden counterparts, so you can rely on them to stand firm when your base is being attacked.

You can also repair cars using the Metalworking skill. It’s great for getting vehicles up and running for better transportation, or for towing trailers.

Hopefully, the metalworking skill will be expanded on in future updates for the game so that you can put your skills to good use. For now, though, you’ll still be able to craft some sturdy buildings, fences, and furniture with it.
