As you’ll discover throughout your playthrough, Hogwarts Legacy does a pretty good job of telling you where to go next (if you so choose), but sometimes, it can be overly cryptic. Here’s how to investigate the Goblin Presence during Rackham’s Trial quest in Hogwarts Legacy.

How to investigate the Goblin Presence in Hogwarts Legacy
To investigate the Goblin Presence during Percival Rackham’s Trial, head into the tent directly left of the keep’s entrance and read the note on the bottle table. The note’s text is orders from Ranrok himself, telling anyone who reads it to search the tower and surrounding area for “anything to do with the names.” Beyond this, it’s fairly vague, yet enough to lead us into the tower for more information.
Investigating the Goblin Presence
Investigating the Goblin Presence takes place toward the start of Percival Rackham’s Trial mission. After you acquire the ability to cast Petrificus Totalus, you’ll enter a keep inhabited by goblins. You can directly confront and eliminate all of them, or sneak around and get by on stealth alone.
Personally, I just ran right in and defeated them all. With enough Levioso and Confringo casts, anything is possible. Alternatively, you can use Disillusionment and Petrificus Totalus to sneak by and stealthily eliminate everyone.
Whatever your choice might be, you will need to investigate the Goblin Presence via a memo in the tent. Facing the doorway you used to enter the keep (where you learned Petrificus Totalus), turn left. See that little tent there? It has the memo you need. Just walk up to it and read it, and the quest will progress.
Get past the goblins
Turn around and face away from the tent. That spire is your next quest objective, where you’ll slowly make your way down to Percival Rackham’s Trial and continue with the main storyline. Goblin presence investigated!
Like before, how you navigate this next area will depend on whether you stealth-kill the goblins or run in and attack them all. It is possible to get through this entire area using Petrificus Totalus and Disillusionment but be prepared for the possibility of one of them noticing you.
This quest was tough to locate at launch, and not much has changed since then. Just make sure you head to the tent and tower to get everything going! We also have a ton of Hogwarts Legacy guides to consult if you run into a similar problem during the main quest or a side mission.
Search the tower
After entering the tower, head up the stairs past the various bookcases, magical brooms, and old crates until you find a painting of Percival Rackham himself. Talk to the painting for some brief dialogue about the current situation and the consequences of the goblins knowing of Rackham. Professor Fig and Rackham will return to the Map Chamber, leaving you to search the tower further.
Head back down the stairs until you reach the tower’s main hall. Here. you’ll investigate the swell on the ground and walk through the mirror to enter a dark hall. Head down this corridor until you officially reach the First Trial door.
How to complete Percival Rackham’s trial in Hogwarts Legacy
While we may be past one of the hardest parts of Percival Rackham’s trial, we’ve got a lot more to explore. Head along the path and various bridges until you find a very large gap. Fortunately, tackling this first mini-puzzle requires going down the staircase and investigating the magic on the floor. Doing this causes a bridge to form, allowing you to cross safely after claiming the nearby treasure chest.
You’ll have to repeat this once more and continue down the trial’s path until you encounter your first enemy. They’re fairly easy to fight, but you’ll still need to make sure you have some solid combat spells prepared. Shortly after, use Accio (the purple pull spell) to pull the right-side floating platform to you, allowing you to propel yourself toward the right-hand side of the room using various latches in the walls and pillars.
Following another fight, you’ll encounter a similar puzzle a second time. This time, interact with the magic swell at the top of the stairs before using Accio to leap onto the left platform. You’ll see yet another magic swell, which will open a portal for you to enter before jumping to the ground level. Cast Accio to pull the platform to the middle of the room, enter the mirror, and walk up the stairwell to the right. Climb onto the platform and Accio yourself to the end of the room.
Walk down the hall and to the right, defeating another set of enemies, before using Accio again to pull yourself to the end of the chasm. Before entering the next area, though, make sure you have plenty of combat spells equipped, including one of each color. Afterward, you’ll find a giant boss room, with the Pensieve Guardian patiently awaiting your arrival.
How to beat the Pensieve Guardian
The Pensieve Guardian looks formidable, but it’s actually quite tame. To take it down, you’ll need to destroy the orb it wields in its hands, which will make it vulnerable. All you need to do is match the color of the orb to your spells and fire away.
Make sure that you’ve equipped a variety of different color spells so that you have all of the tools for the job. Ideally, you’ll have done this before entering the Pensieve Guardian’s chamber. We have a detailed guide on defeating the Pensieve Guardian here.
For now, all you need to remember is that your attacks will depend on an orb’s color. For example, if the Pensieve Guardian starts summoning a purple orb, you’ll need spells like Accio or Depulso. If it’s red, swap it for Confringo or Incendio.
Learn the trial’s secret
A bridge will form once you beat the Pensieve Guardian, connecting you to one last door. Head toward the Pensieve, opening the treasure chest beforehand, before looking inside and viewing Percival Rackham’s memories. You’ll witness a conversation between Rackham and a young Isidora Morganach, who later becomes a Defence Against the Dark Arts professor.
Return to the Map Chamber
After observing these cutscenes, head back to the Map Chamber to speak with Professor Fig and Percival Rackham once more. Following a very lengthy cutscene, you’ll meet Charles Rookwood, who’ll teach you more about magic in the world before wrapping up the conversation. You’ll return to your dorm, marking the end of Percival Rackham’s Trial.
