How to get the Broken Butterfly Magnum in Resident Evil 4 remake

What’re you buyin’? This magnum

Recommended Videos

So you likely already have the Red9 by the time you come across the Broken Butterfly: so you’re good to go when it comes to basic handguns. But the Broken Butterfly is a completely different class of weapon (magnum). When and where do you pick it up? You just need to get to Chapter 7.

You’ll get the Broken Butterfly from The Merchant starting in Chapter 7

As Leon and Ashley prepare to take on the horrors that await them in the castle in Chapter 7, you’ll also have the opportunity to buy the Broken Butterfly magnum. All you need to do is walk up to The Merchant’s stall directly after starting the chapter (or any location after this point) and buy it: for this chapter only, it’s available at a discounted price (with a bonus Magnum ammo recipe).

As the first Magnum you can buy in the remake, the Broken Butterfly is anything but broken. It’s a powerful hand cannon (not to be confused with the capital H Handcannon weapon) that can take out elites and bosses quicker than most of your arsenal. Just note that if you do go for this chapter-specific sale, you will need to manually buy the ammo recipe for “0 Pesetas” from The Merchant.

Magnum ammo takes 17 Gunpowder and one small resource to craft: and said instance of crafting only yields three bullets.

What are magnums good for in theĀ Resident Evil 4 remake?

While folks can use a variety of strategies in theĀ RE4 remake and come out on top, magnum ammo is harder to come by than most other ammo types.

As such, it’s advisable to sparingly use magnums on elites (big/strong enemies) and bosses. One perfect opportunity for magnums to shine is during the double-Garrador encounter in the castle, so you can easily take one of them out and refocus on the other one. Red-hooded Castle Ganados are another prime target, as you can take them out quickly with a magnum shot before they continue to chant and raise more hell.

Later in the game you’ll be able to get the Killer7 magnum in Chapter 11 (also from The Merchant), as well as the Handcannon via a Professional Mode clear. But the Broken Butterfly will be extremely useful for at least four chapters: if not beyond. It’s definitely worth including in your arsenal and saved me quite a bit of trouble during my journeys with it by my side.
