How to get Gomphotherium Skin in Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV)

Despite appearances, they have a lot of skin

Once you’ve completed the Dawntrail MSQ in Final Fantasy XIV, you might start to think about leveling up those crafters, or otherwise unlocking Wachumeqimeqi Deliveries. As part of this, you’re going to need some new materials for crafting.

Gomphotherium Skin is used to create Gomphotherium Leather, which is a vital ingredient when crafting gear for all classes from level 96 upwards. While materials for crafting can usually be purchased on the Marketboard, they’re likely to be commanding a high price this early into an expansion. Luckily, you can get these materials by other means, like farming monsters or trading Bicolor Gemstones.

How to farm Gomphotherium Skin in Final Fantasy XIV

If you aren’t willing to pay for your Gomphotherium Skin, you’re going to have to get it direct from the source, and this means hunting down and killing some Gomphotherium. These metallic elephants are found in Heritage Found, particularly on one of the small connected islands to the west of the map.

They do drop up to three (3) Gomphotherium Skins per kill. Plus, there’s a large number of them in a relatively small area, so you can farm them easily.

If you’ve been farming FATEs, as part of Dawntrail’s Shared FATEs or otherwise, you’ve likely stocked up on Bicolor Gemstones. These can be traded with Gemstone Traders for trading materials, including Gomphotherium Skin.

If you’re already in Heritage Found, or haven’t completed all of your Shared FATEs you can always visit Toashana in The Outskirts (X:16.3, Y:9.6). As long as you’ve completed at lease one FATE in Heritage Found, you’ll be able to purchase Gomphotherium Skin for 3 Bicolor Gemstones each.

If you’ve completed all of your Shared FATEs, you will have unlocked the two major Gemstone Traders in Dawntrail’s city hubs. These Gemstone Traders are a one-stop shop for all of the crafting materials previously sold in individual areas.

Gemstone Traders in Dawntrail’s city hubs can be found in the following locations:

  • Beryl in Solution Nine (X:8.4, Y:14.0)
  • Kajeel Ja in Tuliyollal (X:12.8, Y:13.0)

Occasionally, Retainers sent out on level 99 Hunting Ventures will bring back some Gomphotherium Skin, but this is rare and you have no control over this method.

You can also get lucky and find some Gomphotherium Skin (or if you’re really lucky, some ready made Leather) inside a Br’aaxskin and Loboskin Maps Treasure Hunt Coffers. Although these are level 100 maps, Br’aaxskin maps are pretty easy to farm with as little as two people, and Loboskin maps are designed to be completed solo.

As I said, Gomphotherium Skin can be used to craft Gomphotherium Leather. This is a level 96 Leatherworker recipe, and you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 8 Earth Crystals
  • 1 Acacia Bark

Once you’ve got Gomphotherium Leather, you’ll be able to craft a lot of different recipes, including the following:
