Love it or hate it, Final Fantasy XIV’s Eureka questline is overflowing with collectible goodies worth the grind. There’s a novel’s worth of walkthroughs and lore explainers hiding within each zone, but sometimes you’ve just got your eye on one little gem in particular. If that’s the case with the FFXIV Fafnir minion, we’ve got you.
Before grinding, let’s make one thing crystal clear: Wind-up Fafnir is tradeable; you can buy it on the Market Board. And in addition to being adorable, Fafnir is one of the go-to minions for grinding Lord of Virminion’s weekly MGP log rewards.
Item descriptions key you in on if something is market prohibited or not, but in this case, anyone with the Gil handy can buy Fafnir. As of Patch 6.4, the little guy is cheap on my server, like cheaper than most teleports. Regardless, if you’re headed into Eureka anyway, here’s our very own Cliff Notes-styled highlights of the task.
Unlocking Eureka, Stormblood’s relic questline
First off, you’ll need to unlock the FFXIV relic quests released in the Stormblood expansion, The Forbidden Land Eureka. The bad news is that there’s four zones to plow through, but the good news is Fafnir drops in the Anemos, the first area.
To Unlock Eureka Anemos, you’ll need to meet a few requirements:
- Complete Stormblood, part of the 4.0 Main Scenario
- Reach Level 70
- Speak to Galinea in Rhalgar’s Reach (X: 9.8, Y: 12.5)
- Begin the ‘And We Shall Call It Eureka‘ quest
Completing the quest takes you to Kugane, where you’ll speak with Rodney at Pier #1. He’ll take you into Anemos, and speaking to Krile paves the way through this first area. For the FFXIV Fafnir minion, you won’t have too much left to do.
How to get the FFXIV Fafnir Minion (Wind-up Fafnir)
Once inside, we’ll assume you listened to Krile and tried out Eureka’s unique element-based and leveling systems. To score the ferocious new companion, look for one of Eureka’s Notorious Monster Fates, Wine and Honey.
Wine and Honey is a Level 17 Fate, so you’ll have to spend some time grinding through Anemos and force the encounter to spawn. To do that, farm Fossil Dragons at night in the northeastern cavern area, Uncanny Valley. Eventually, Wine and Honey pops and a bigger, meaner Fafnir spawns.
The Fate has a chance of rewarding Wind-up Fafnir, but the dragon also comes from a lucky Anemos Lockbox drop. As of Endwalker, the Eureka EXP is probably more valuable than the minion itself, but there’s plenty of Eureka-related goodies worth the trouble, so challenging the Notorious Monster isn’t a wasted effort.
Ultimately, our best advice is to plow your way through Anemos for the story and Relic glamour, and simply buy the minion. So, whether you bought or fought your way through for the little dragon, congratulations on your Wind-up Fafnir.
