Fields of Mistria is, at its heart, a farming sim and this means that like any good farmer, you’re going to want some animals. To begin with, it’s not exactly clear how to get animals on your farm but don’t worry, I can guide you through it.

Before you can get animals on your farm, you need to be able to make animal feed for them to eat. To do this, you’ll first need to repair the run down Mill in Mistria’s town center.

Just like repairing the Bridge, you’ll need to wait for a letter from Adeline in the mail before you can begin the quest to repair the Mill. This letter will come in the latter half of Spring, after the Spring Festival. Once you’ve received the letter, head up to the Manor and talk to Adeline in her office on the left of the building.

After speaking to her, you’ll now have a new donations box to fill with resources. It’s located outside of the Mill, and you’ll need to put in the following resources:

  • 150 Wood
  • 200 Stone
  • 2 Copper Ingots

You’ll also need to save up 1,000 Tessarae, but this doesn’t need to be put into the donations box.

Once you’ve put all the resources in the box and saved up the required Tessarae, you can find Adeline and talk to her again to repair the Mill. This will spark a tutorial on making Animal Feed, and Ryis will tell you that Coops and Barns are now available from the Carpenter’s Shop.

Coops and Barns come in two sizes, small and large. You’ll now be able to purchase the blueprint for any of these. Small blueprints cost 1,500 Tessarae each, while large blueprints cost 2,000 Tesserae each. There are two different colors available for each, but the resources required don’t change:

To build a Coop, you’ll need the following resources:

  • 75 Wood
  • 50 Stone

Whereas a Barn will use the following resources:

  • 100 Wood
  • 75 Stone

A small Coop or Barn can hold up to four animals, while a large Coop or Barn can hold a couple more. Once you’ve purchased the blueprint, you’ll be able to put it down on your farm, add the resources, then craft the building yourself before naming it.

Remember that crafting in Fields of Mistria uses up some of your time, so make sure to plan accordingly and perhaps don’t start building your Coop or Barn at midnight, lest you pass out halfway through.

How to get animals in Fields of Mistria

Now that you’ve got your farm building prepared, you can visit Hayden at Sweetwater Farm to purchase some animals. At the time of writing, there are only two types of animals who can be adopted — chickens and cows. It should go without saying, but chickens can be placed into a Coop while cows can be placed into a Barn.

Each animal costs 1,000 Tesserae and starts life as a baby, before slowly becoming an adult capable of giving you produce. Chickens will eventually provide eggs and feathers, while cows will give you milk. These items can be used in crafting or cooking, and milk can be turned into cheese at the Mill.

Once you have animals, you can use the bell on the outside of the Coop or Barn to either send them free roaming outside on your farm, or call them back to the building. While outside of their respective buildings, chickens and cows will munch on weeds around your farm, but it’s still a good idea to keep their troughs topped up with Animal Feed.
