How to fully complete the Monster List in Super Mario RPG

It's not a missable achievement!

The Super Mario RPG remake is faithful to the original Super Nintendo classic, but it does add a few twists. Among the new features in the game is the Monster List, which tracks every single monster you’ve encountered in the game.

To fully complete the Monster List, you need to not only battle every monster in the game, but use Mallow’s Thought Peak skill on them with a correctly timed button press. This will reveal some extra flavor text, which is tracked by the Monster List. Now, you may look at this task and think this is virtually impossible to accomplish on your first run. After all, a lot of enemies are extremely easy to permanently miss. However, regardless of how you play, the remake offers a secret way to let you earn 100% completion even if you skipped monsters!

This is a good thing, since there’s no way to scan enemies that you fight before you recruit Mallow. That said, you still want to use Thought Peak on as many monsters as you can along the way, since filling in the slots you missed will cost you a pretty penny. Here’s what you need to do.

After you beat the game and create a postgame file, return to Booster Pass. In the second area, head to the right and you’ll see a note pinned to the rock wall. Reading this will inform you of the “Monster List Entry Agent,” which naturally should make you curious. Go into the small opening immediately to your right, and you’ll see an NPC hidden from your view here.

This NPC is your ticket for completing your Monster List. The helpful fellow will automatically fill in entries for all monsters you encountered before you recruited Mallow, including Bowser. From here, the agent will fill in your Monster List for three Frog Coins per entry. As far as I can tell, entries that the Agent fills in are chosen randomly.

Since there are so many easy to miss enemies in the game, you could easily owe upwards of 99 Frog Coins to fully complete the Monster List. For this reason, I recommend manually encountering and scanning every enemy you can with Mallow before spitting out your Frog Coins. This includes enemies summoned by bosses, or any time a boss changes its form. These are all separate entries in the Monster List.

Fortunately, Frog Coins are pretty easily farmable if you know where to look. You can check out our guide here to quickly grind Frog Coins.

Do you get anything for completing the Monster List in Super Mario RPG?

Yes and no. Once you max out the Monster List, the Agent will comment on your achievement and give you the Monster Trophy. This item, as far as I can tell, doesn’t do anything. It just exists as vanity item for you to enjoy. Afterwards, the Agent will close up shop, and your business together will be concluded.

You will get a neat star to look at on your Monster List, so your accomplishment is well acknowledged. It just doesn’t trigger any kind of cool secret or hidden boss fight or anything like that. If you just want an excuse to play more Super Mario RPG, then I’d definitely aim to fill out this list. Enjoying this world for longer was enough of a reward for me.
