Update 3:34 PM EST – Servers appear to be coming online as players are reporting getting placed into queue. If you’re not able to get into queue, try restarting your game client.

Update 3:15 PM EST – Path of Exile 2 Game Director Jonathan Rogers has indicated that the launch is ‘Relatively Imminent.’

Update 3:01 PM EST – According to GGG, they’ve found a last minute crash and have fixed it as well and it is currently being deployed but launch has been delayed just a little longer.

This general error means that something interrupted the connection between your Path of Exile 2 client and the online game servers. Because Path of Exile 2 is a persistent online game, you need to be connected to the servers to log in and play.

As of 2:30 PM EST, the Path of Exile 2 game servers have not yet been brought online, which is why would will receive the ‘An unexpected disconnection occured’ error when trying to login. According to Grinding Gear Games, the servers should be online and running within the next half hour, so by 3:00 PM EST.

How to fix the unexpected disconnect bug

At the moment, all you can do is wait until the Path of Exile 2 servers are brought online, as the launch has been slightly delayed. According to developer Grinding Gear Games, they are deploying some last-minute improvements to the game database to handle the over one million players that have already purchased access to the ARPG.

Even though it may be tempting to keep spamming the login button, that won’t actually improve your chances of connecting as the servers are simply offline at the moment and therefore there is no way to connect to them. However, this can be seen as a good thing, that the current issue isn’t due to the servers being overwhelmed, but rather that they are just offline at the moment.

In the event you’re still getting this error after the servers are brought online, it more than likely means you’re having a connection issue. Here are some general tips to fix unexpected disconnection issues with online games:

  • Check the game server status to ensure the game servers are online.
  • Make sure your ISP is not having an outage of any sort.
  • Try using a wired connection instead of a wireless one for a more stable connection.
  • Double-check that you are on the updated version of the game, as the client and server must be the same versions to connect.

It’s also recommended that you completely restart your game client that way you’ll force download any updates but also start a fresh brand new connection to Path of Exile 2.
