How to fix the Holy Chalice bug in Diablo 4

A truly bizarre case

Recommended Videos

For an item thatā€™s meant to exorcise demons, the Holy Chalice has led to a pretty cursed bug in Diablo 4. Given that itā€™s, well, a bug, itā€™s hard to pin down what exactly is going on here. All we know is that players report this item either constantly appearing at the gate of Kyovashad, or constantly popping out of their inventory. In one case, it looks like this bug can even prevent you from completing certain quests.

Whether this is just an aesthetic annoyance or a genuine hindrance, the Holy Chalice bug is perplexing either way. Letā€™s go over the details.

What is the Holy Chalice?

The Holy Chalice is an item linked to a questline in Kyovashad involving Sister Octavia. If you like to do sidequests the moment you see them, you may not even remember these missions. Though Diablo 4 doesnā€™t let you check your questlog for cleared missions, here are the quest names for you to reference:

  • Malady of the Soul
  • Depths of Despair
  • Faith in Blood

The item would normally appear in the ā€œQuestā€ tab of your inventory. Furthermore, it should completely leave your bag upon completion of these quests. However, some key items in Diablo 4 will pop out of your inventory if you try to leave an area before clearing certain objectives. It seems that behavior is somehow applying to the Holy Chalice, even though the item shouldnā€™t work this way to begin with.

What causes the Holy Chalice Bug?

Again, bugs are hard to explain becauseā€¦ well, they arenā€™t supposed to happen. Some conjecture links this bug to switching World Tiers while the Sister Octavia questline is active.

Personally, I cleared these quests on World Tier 3, and I havenā€™t seen any funny business concerning the Holy Chalice. That’s just my experience, since I otherwise can’t confirm or deny this theory. That said, if you want to prevent this bug, clearing these quests before adjusting World Tiers seems advisable. I havenā€™t found any other leads regarding what causes this bug, so even if thereā€™s only a small chance that this helps, Iā€™d say take it seriously.

How to solve the Holy Chalice bug

Once again, given the nature of bugs in general, I canā€™t pin down a solid solution for this bug. Reports online donā€™t indicate consistent success with any single fix, so take any suggestion with a grain of salt. However, since these solutions appear to work for some people, Iā€™d say theyā€™re worth a shot.

The first potential solution involves looking for a new quest by the Kyovashad Waypoint. Some players have noted that clearing this quest seems to, somehow, resolve the Holy Chalice bug. Youā€™ll want to clear sidequests to max out your Renown anyway, so Iā€™d recommend clearing other quests around Kyovashad in hopes that you might trigger that magic fix.

The other fix seems to involve just teleporting back to Kyovashad. Youā€™ll likely do this while trying the above method, but some have reported success just from this method. Teleporting takes little time, so I’d try this just in case.

Otherwise, the only real solution is to wait for Blizzard to fix the Holy Chalice bug themselves. As annoying as this glitch is, your best bet might just be to clear other tasks off your to-do list and hope for this to get patched. Thereā€™s plenty to do in Diablo 4, so hopefully we wonā€™t have to resort to these roundabout fixes soon.

If this bug happens to interfere with your progress in the game, I recommend contacting Blizzard themselves. Best of luck with your Unholy Chalice Bug.
