How to find and defeat the Creaking in Minecraft

The Pale Garden sure is spooky.

The Creaking may be one of Minecraft’s scariest monsters if you’re unprepared to face it. Although learning its mechanics turns it into a fairly easy-to-avoid enemy, you can still struggle against it if you’re not careful. Fortunately, it’s easier to handle than you’d expect.

Where to find the Creaking in Minecraft

When it comes to Minecraft’s natural monster generation, The Creaking exclusively spawns in the Pale Garden biome. The Pale Garden is a dreary forest biome with grey leaves, moss, and logs that differentiate it from other areas. You’ll know you’re close to The Creaking when you arrive in the Pale Garden at night and start spotting Creaking Hearts inside trees.

Although they only appear in the Pale Garden initially, it’s possible to manually spawn The Creaking anywhere if you have a Creaking Heart and some pale oak logs. We’ll dive more into this mechanic later, but your goal is to find a Pale Garden to encounter the Creaking for the first time.

Once you enter the Pale Garden, you’re looking for one of two things: the Creaking itself or a Creaking Heart. The Creaking is a two-block-tall enemy that roams around the area, having a similar appearance to the biome’s trees and foliage. Don’t be surprised if you miss it initially; its skin makes for some effective camouflage.

It can also only stay within a Creaking Heart’s chunk. This is important to know to defeat it since you’ll need to find this heart to damage The Creaking.

How to defeat the Creaking in Minecraft

Once you come into contact with The Creaking, you have two options for dealing with it: break its connected Creaking Heart or run away. You can even attack it to spawn in some resin for building, but this won’t actually defeat it.

Nonetheless, let’s talk about all three options.

Since The Creaking can’t stray too far from its Creaking Heart, you can easily run away from it if you have enough stamina to sprint away. You may encounter other Creaking enemies along the way, but at least you have an escape option if you’re low on health or don’t want to fight the monster.

Alternatively, you can try fighting The Creaking. However, if you try to attack it without breaking its connected Creaking Heart, you won’t inflict any damage to the monster. It’s completely immune to all attacks until you destroy its heart. However, it won’t move if you stare directly at it, making its sight mechanics the opposite of an Enderman’s.

Attacking an invulnerable Creaking has its benefits. Grey and orange particles will spawn each time you attack it, indicating the nearest Creaking Heart. You can follow this path to the heart, allowing you to destroy it. Hitting the Creaking also spawns in resin, which you can use to make a resin farm if you can avoid getting killed by the enemy.

Once you destroy the Creaking Heart, you’ll be ready to attack the monster to defeat it once and for all. It only has a half-heart of health, allowing you to easily one-shot it with most weapons. You can stare at the Creaking to make it stop moving until you reach it, or you can look away and let it approach you before inflicting the killing blow.
