How to counter Vecna

The best way to counter Vecna is to utilize the Magic Items that spawn in chests specifically when Vecna is the chosen killer. The chests regenerate as the round goes on, allowing you to replenish up to two Magic Items that are great counters to Vecna. You can see the chests glowing with a white aura when they have a Magic Item in them.

Each of the Magic Items allow you to see an aura specific to one of the four spells that Vecna is able to cast. Here are all four Magic Items you can obtain and what they do:

  • Archivist – Reveals Aura of Dispelling Sphere as it expands
  • Interloper – Reveals aura of any pallet affected by Mage Hand
  • Nightwatch – Reveals aura of skulls during Flight of the Damned cast
  • Skyguard – Reveals aura of Vecna during Fly

Nightwatch and Interloper in particular are very powerful Magic Items that can help deal with the tougher tediums that Vecna can throw at you. Skyguard can also be useful for being able to keep a track of where Vecna is, and where he is heading, if you have no other perks that assist you with doing so.

There are also unique ways to counter each of Vecna’s four spells. Here is how to counter each of Vecna’s spells:

How to counter Fly

Vecna’s Fly spell allows him to quickly levitate in the air and fly in any direction while having no collision. At the end of the Fly animation, collision is re-enabled. The key method to countering Vecna’s Fly spell is to turn around and run towards the direction he is coming from, as he can’t turn around from the direction he is flying in. You can also strategically body block him as he attempts to land out of his Fly, which can really stagger and disorient Vecna.

How to counter Flight of the Damned

The Flight of the Damned spell for Vecna sends up to five skulls in a direction that can hit Survivors. While st wrong, the Flight of the Damned spell can be dodged simply by crouching as the skulls come at you, as they will not hit you if you are crouched. They also slowly spread out as the fly across the map, so you can run away from them and then easily dodge in between them as they spread out further and further.

How to counter Dispelling Sphere

When Vecna casts Dispelling Sphere, a giant invisible sphere is formed that gives Vecna 3 seconds of Killer Instinct within the sphere and disables all Magic Items it hits for 60 seconds. When Vecna casts this spell you can tell by the change in his avatar on the HUD in the bottom left corner of the screen. It slowly expands, so the easiest way to counter this spell is to simply run from it. However, even if you are hit, it’s not incredibly strong as the Killer Instinct reveal only lasts 3 seconds.

How to counter Mage Hand

One of the more interesting spells in Vecna’s arsenal is Mage Hand, which allows him to block a pallet from being dropped for 4 seconds or allows him to quickly pick up one that was dropped. If possible continue in the same loop as it will take away Vecna’s ability to chase you for a second while he blocks the pallet or lifts it. In the event he lifts the pallet you are looping around, you will be able to once again drop it and he will be on cooldown from using Mage Hand.
