How to complete “A Present for my Son” in Octopath Traveler 2

The quill is mightier than the sword

A Present for my Son is a short sidequest you can find in Winterbloom. In it, a Thoughtful Father wants to give his aspiring scholar of a son the perfect gift, which, honestly, is heartwarming. It’s only natural that you wouldn’t want to leave this kind father hanging, regardless of what rewards await you at the end of this quest.

Fortunately, this quest is very easy to resolve. All you have to do is find the Silver Quill, which you should be capable of finding by this point.

Where to find the Silver Quill in Octopath Traveler 2

You’ll find the Silver Quill in Cape Cold, the town where Osvald begins his journey proper. You want to look for the Retired Scholar NPC, who is in two possible locations.

During the day, look in the house on the left side of Cape Cold. The Retired Scholar will be the only person inside. Use Partitio’s Purchase or Throne’s Steal Path Action to snag the Silver Quill off him. No judgment on which route you choose.

If you’d prefer to use a nighttime Path Action instead, you’ll find the Retired Scholar by the beach after sundown. This provides you the freedom to use Agnea’s Entreat or Osvald’s Mug to get the Silver Quill instead. The Scholar only has a strength rating of two, so the fight should give you no trouble at this stage of the game.

Once the Silver Quill is in your inventory, return to the Thoughtful Father in Winterbloom. Say yes to the prompt to give the item to him and watch a short and sweet cutscene play out between the papa and his boy. Your reward will be 300 leaves, a Magic Nut (M), and a Refreshing Jam. I never thought a writing utensil could trigger such a wholesome moment, but honestly, I have no complaints.
