It's possible, and it's great.

But what if you hate the color? Have no fear. You don’t have to change the colors piece by piece. There is a way to change the whole ship’s color at once.

To change your ship color, talk to a Ship Technician, then ask them if you can modify your ships. Hit B or X to go into the shipbuilder.

From there, select any part of your ship and double left-click it with the mouse, or hit RB twice on the controller. This will highlight every part of your ship, and it will all turn red.

Now, with the cursor over at least one piece of the ship, hit J on the keyboard or LS (click the left thumbstick) on the controller. This will bring up the option to recolor the ship. You will have a set number of areas available that you can make different colors.

When it comes to what color to make your ship, that is entirely up to you. There are all manner of sources of inspiration, such as other ships in science-fiction shows or movies and cool things from anime (the ever-popular Eva-01 color scheme from Neon Genesis Evangelion).
