How to change keybinds and other useful settings in Fields of Mistria

I can see clearly now the leaves are gone...

Fields of Mistria just made its Early Access, and I’ve fiddled around with the settings enough to have some useful tips. Whether you want to see more of the landscape at once or do more with less clicks, the Settings menu has plenty of little tweaks to help you.

Fields of Mistria may lack a few of the usual options expected, such as resolution and volume controls, but there are also some others that become incredibly helpful in specific circumstances.

How to keybind Charged and Repeated tool actions

I’ve seen a lot of discussion from people lamenting having to click repeatedly for menial tasks, like chopping down a tree. Some people have even asked for a setting where a tool will automatically keep going by holding down a button. Well, I’m pleased to say this setting already exists. All you need to do is:

  • Go into Settings
  • Select Controls
  • Scroll down to Use Tool (Repeated)

You can rebind this to whatever you like, but I chose to rebind it to my left mouse button, allowing me to simply hold it down to keep using my tool. Rebinding the button for a Charged action, such as watering a larger area, is also possible. While the default button for this on keyboard is ‘T,’ I chose to rebind it to my middle button, so I don’t have to reach for the key to do more.

Use the In-game Scale function to see more

Now listen, I know this is a really specific situation, but have you ever been fishing down at Mistria’s Beach and see a giant fish shadow, only for it to disappear off of your screen? I have, more times than I care to admit. And that’s how I found this setting.

The In-game Scale is set to 2x by default, but changing it to 1x lets you see a huge amount more of the world around you. While it’s disconcerting at first, I find it particularly useful in the above situation, but also while trying to eradicate those pesky weeds on my farm. It’s also really easy to switch between the two.

If you’re playing on a larger resolution (I’m playing in windowed 1400×900 because I need other windows visible), then you can also zoom further in if you want to. 3x scale is a bit much for most people, but I would imagine it’s great for screenshots to show off your latest outfit choice.

Frequently tabbing out? Pause on unfocus is here for you

Making sure this setting is on will allow you to have Fields of Mistria running in the background without wasting any time in-game

If, like me, you spend a lot of time flicking between different windows and aren’t blessed with multiple screens, this setting will prevent you from wasting away the precious in-game hours when you’re not looking at the game.

You don’t even have to minimize the screen. As long as there’s another window even slightly overlapping with Fields of Mistria, the time will freeze, and you can go back at any point to continue where you left off. This is also a good way to prevent accidentally passing out in the mines if you forget to pause.

This setting should be active by default, but you can check by going to Settings and then Gameplay.

Those falling leaves can be a problem

Whether you’re having a hard time focusing on what’s going on behind the leaves, or so much movement is causing you a headache, you can reduce the intensity of these leaves or even remove them altogether in the settings.

It’s definitely a subtle change if you opt for ‘Low’, but it’s absolutely worthwhile if you want to minimize the amount of movement on screen. To find this setting, go to Settings and then Accessibility. This doesn’t just work on Leaves, either – it makes a huge difference during rainy or snowy days.
