Get the Greater Potentate’s Cookbooks and craft Hefty Pots

The best way to beat Furnace Golems in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is with the help of Hefty Fire Pots and Hefty Furnace Pots. The Greater Potentate’s Cookbook [2] can be found by visiting the Greatbridge, North Site of Grace which is just northwest of the bridge that leads to Castle Ensis.

From the Greatbridge, North Site of Grace, head southeast along the lower cliffs that go under the Ellace Greatbridge. Here you will find a Run-Down Traveler’s Rest with a corpse inside holding loot. This is the Greater Potentate’s Cookbook [2].

There are two Hefty Pots that you can use in battle against the Furnace Golems: Hefty Fire Pots, and Hefty Furnace Pots. Both are crafted using the Greater Potentate Cookbook, with the Hefty Fire Pots dealing about 20% damage to the Furnace Golem and Hefty Furnace Pots dealing a massively devastating 50%+ damage to the Furnace Golems.

Here are the materials required to craft each Hefty Pot:

Hefty Fire Pot

  • 1 Redflesh Mushroom
    • Found everywhere around the Realm of Shadow. Simply ride around the Gravesite Plains to find these.
  • 1 Black Pyrefly
    • Found in Legacy Dungeons and open areas inhabited by enemies in the Realm of Shadow.

Hefty Furnace Pot

  • 1 Redflesh Mushroom
    • Found everywhere around the Realm of Shadow. Simply ride around the Gravesite Plains to find these.
  • 1 Ember of Messmer
    • Found around Scadu Atlus, the second zone in Shadow of the Erdtree after defeating Rellena in Castle Ensis.
  • 1 Furnace Visage
    • Several are found throughout the Realm of Shadow, but also dropped by Furnace Golems when defeated.

Furnace Golem boss guide and strategy

With a few Hefty Pots in hand, it’s time to take down a Furnace Golem. The first one you can encounter is found wandering around the Gravesite Plain. These things are massive, so it’s tough to miss them, but you can head to the Scorched Ruins Site of Grace and then head north to find one.

You’ll want to fight a majority of this battle on horseback, so summon Torrent and ride up to the Furnace Golem. Despite having armored legs, this is where you’ll want to start beating on the Furnace Golem, focusing on the same leg if possible.

Throughout the fight, the Furnace Golem will try to swing its arms at you, so it’s good to try and stay behind its legs as it cannot reach you there.

As you beat on its leg, you’ll see the Furnace Golem start to emit flames from the leg and raise it up in the air. When this happens, get ready to double jump while on Torrent to stay in the air as long as possible. The Furnace Golem slams its leg into the ground, causing flames to erupt from under it out in a wave that catches the nearby area on fire. You need to jump in the air on Torrent and then double jump again to extend your time in the air to avoid taking damage from the flames.

The Furnace Golem will also do an attack where it jumps into the air completely, both legs off the ground, before slamming and doing an attack similar to the one above. It’s avoided the same way; double jump in the air with Torrent.

How to kill the Furnace Golem

After dealing enough damage to one of its legs, the Furnace Golem will stumble and fall to the ground. When this happens, you have two options: dismount and begin beating on the front face plate of the Furnace Golem that is now lying on the ground, or switch to one of the Hefty Fire Pots or Hefty Furnace Pots you crafted and toss it in the “basket” located around the head of the Furnace Golem.

Depending on your weapon or build, you can do a lot of damage to the Furnace Golem just by beating on its face plate while it’s lying on the ground. But if you want to do a guaranteed chunk of damage to the Furnace Golem, toss the Hefty Pots into its basket causing it to explode dealing massive damage.

Regardless of which option you choose, the Furnace Golem will then stand back up after which you can rinse and repeat. Do this entire process a few times and you will kill the Furnace Golem.

Future Furnace Golems that you encounter will have you at an elevation advantage. They will hurl fireballs at you and spray fire from their hands, which you will have to dodge. However, from this elevation, you can chuck your Hefty Pots directly into the head baskets of the Furnace Golems to inflict massive damage without having to fell them first.

Every Furnace Golem that you kill in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree will reward you with new Crystal Tears to mix into your Flask of Wonderous Physick as well as Furnace Visages that can be used to craft items such as the Hefty Furnace Pot. Unfortunately, Furnace Golems do not reward you with any Runes for defeating them.
