How to assign crew to your Outposts in Starfield

Give them something to do.

Outposts are an essential part of Starfield, especially if you want to hoover up as many resources as possible. Not only can you build sprawling outposts that do all manner of interesting things, but you can also crew them with some of your less interesting companions. That’s right, they can be used for more than carrying spacesuits and guns and taking up space on your ship.

To assign crew to your outpost, you must do it via the Crew menu, which is part of the Ship menu. Hit H on the keyboard or the menu button on the controller, then select the ship menu. Hit C to open the Crew menu on the keyboard or Y on the controller to open up the Crew menu.

You will then see a complete list of all your available companions and crew, and from this screen, you can assign them. The bit that is probably catching people out is that you cannot assign a crew member unless there is an open assignment for them. That means a spot on a ship or an available outpost. To be able to assign someone to an outpost at all, you need to build a Crew Station at that outpost. This will give them somewhere to work, although building a small cubicle on some strange moon or planet does look silly.

To make the Crew Station, you will need the following resources:

  • 3 Nickel
  • 5 Aluminum
  • 2 Iron

You can have up to eight active outposts at the start of the game, but it will be some time before you have enough crew to assign to all of them or even the resources to build them up. It’s a good idea to focus on a single outpost and learn the ins and outs of running it before setting up more. You’ll also need to set up your first outpost on a planet that doesn’t have a hazardous environment. There are also some very important considerations for where you should set up your first outpost.
