How does Punishing Downpour work in Black Myth: Wukong?

The thunder drop.

As you upgrade your starting staff to the right tree in Black Myth: Wukong, you might notice the Unique Effect, Punishing Downpour. It’s easy to overlook some options in the haste to upgrade, but the Martial Arts tree ability is worth the investment.

So, how does it work and what uses are there for the Unique Effect. We’ll break down how Punishing Downpour works in Black Myth: Wukong below, along with the best builds it suits.

What is Punishing Downpour in Black Myth: Wukong?

Punishing Downpour is an ability you unlock as you spend more skill points (or Sparks) on the left side of the Martial Arts tree of the Foundation menu. It’s a must-have skill if you like performing light attack combos and want to use a build around it.

This move is essentially a combo ender that works similarly to a charged heavy attack. The only difference is that you don’t need focus points to execute it.

In any case, the Kang-Jin Staff’s Unique Effect turns Punishing Downpour’s damage into Thunder instead of it being AoE. It’s particularly strong in the mid-game because it’s quite difficult to actually inflict status effects (or the Four Banes).

It can be difficult to know what each skill is called since there are so many you can spec into in Black Myth: Wukong. Navigating the menus just to see if you’re using a particular move in your build can also be jarring.

Is Punishing Downpour good or worth it?

As mentioned previously, Punishing Downpour is very much worth it if you’re going for a light attack combo build. If you pair this with the Loongscale set, that attack at the end of a light attack combo will have its damage increased.

If you spec your build into other stances, this won’t be worth it too much and you’re only going to really start using the Staff just for its increased attack stat and boost to critical hit chance.

You won’t miss out on the unique effect early on if you need something with better stats.
