Hollow Knight Silksong: Release window, and everything confirmed

Will it come before the heat death of the universe?

It must be a painful existence being a Hollow Knight fan. The game launched in 2017, and in February 2019, Team Cherry revealed a teaser trailer for the sequel. Ever since, Hollow Knight: Silksong has been on the wishlist for a great many gamers every time an industry event rolls around. And every time (so far), fans of the original wind up feeling disappointed. And needless to say, we’re still waiting.

So, let’s discuss what we know for sure about Hollow Knight: Silksong, including whether we even have a confirmed release window.

Is there a release date for Hollow Knight: Silksong?

I’d like to first address the elephant in the room — there is no confirmed release date or window. In May of 2023, developer Team Cherry’s PR and marketing representative Matthew Griffin wrote in a post on Twitter that they initially planned to release Silksong in the first half of 2023. However, it wound up seeing delays due to its increasingly large scope.

“We’re excited by how the game is shaping up, and it’s gotten quite big, so we want to take the time to make the game as good as we can,” said Griffin.

That said, we do know that when Silksong does come out, Game Pass subscribers will have access to it on Day 1.

What else do we know about Hollow Knight: Silksong?

It helps that we actually know quite a bit about the game outside of the lack of a release date. For example, we know that it’ll be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac, and Linux. Also, it’s worth noting the protagonist won’t be The Knight, as in the original game. Rather, players will control Hornet, the deuteragonist of Hollow Knight.

According to an info sheet provided by Team Cherry, the game begins with Hornet being “captured and brought to this unfamiliar land,” and players will need to “battle foes and solve mysteries as [Hornet] ascends on a deadly pilgrimage to the kingdom’s peak.” In Silksong, there will be more than 150 new enemies to take down as you make your way to the top of the world. Thankfully, you’ll have access to “a whole new suite of nimble moves” to make quick work of them.

To add, once you complete the game once, you can take advantage of Silk Soul mode. This is an “all-new mode that spins the game into a unique, challenging experience.”

It might be unclear when we can get our hands on Hollow Knight: Silksong. But with any luck, there’ll be an announcement before the heat death of the universe. Though, considering the recent controversies surrounding Unity, and the fact that Team Cherry’s coder Jack Vine liked a post on Twitter suggesting the game might take another five years while they work on migrating to a different engine … who knows?
