Hogwarts Legacy was meant to get DLC this year, but Warner Bros. reportedly canned it this week

Avada Kedavra.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter’s smash hit 2023 game Hogwarts Legacy had an expansion planned for 2025, but it’s reportedly been canceled.

The unannounced DLC, planned to release along with a “Definitive Edition” of the game later this year, had the plug pulled “as part of an ongoing restructuring” at Warner Bros. Discovery’s video games department, according to a report by Bloomberg.

The prequel to the Harry Potter books and films sold incredibly well with over 34 million copies thus far, so a DLC would have likely been a big hit as well. But according to the report, the projected just canceled this week “in part due to concerns that the amount of content was not substantial enough to justify the price being considered.”

While the DLC apparently won’t be happening now, a sequel is still under development at Avalanche Software, which developed the original game. The expansion was planned to include a storyline connected to one of the game’s companions that was cut during development and never made it to the full game, the report said.

Warner Bros. has already shut down three studios and canceled a Wonder Woman game earlier this year, according to Bloomberg, and ended live-service development for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. That game’s developer, Rocksteady Studios, was helping Avalanche with the Hogwarts Legacy DLC, reportedly.

While Warner Bros. continues to restructure its gaming division, it sits on several high-profile franchises that could translate wonderfully to games, such as DC Comics, Looney Tunes, The Terminator, Beetlejuice, Gremlins, and dozens more. This doesn’t even include successful game franchises like Mortal Kombat. But for now, nothing the company has tried outside of Hogwarts Legacy has seen the success it wishes for.

Another Harry Potter game launched last year in Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, but it fizzled quickly and failed to reach a wide audience. Don’t be surprised if the wizarding sport ends up as a playable mini-game or something even bigger in the Hogwarts Legacy sequel one day.
