If you happen to boot up either your Wii U or Nintendo Switch with the intention to play the latest instalment in the Zelda series, you may notice that there is a new update available for it. According to Nintendo’s incredibly vague patch notes, this update will make for a “…more pleasant gaming experience,” although the company is yet to give any more specific details as to what this entails.

Version 1.1.1

  • Adjustments have been made to make for a more pleasant gaming experience.

This doesn’t really give us much to go on, does it?

Well, according to several reports on NeoGAF, this patch does seem to provide a few worthwhile improvements to Breath of the Wild. Notably, many users are claiming that the framerate in both the Korok Forest and the Great Plateau — two areas that were notoriously sluggish in prior versions of the game — is markedly improved, even if they do still contain noticeable dips in performance.

Needless to say, these reports managed to pique my curiosity somewhat. After having a cursory glance at these two areas on my own copy of Breath of the Wild for the Nintendo Switch, I will say that the Korok Forest is still noticeably choppy, although performance doesn’t appear to be as awful as it was prior to updating the game. The same could be said for the Great Plateau, although the dips in framerate in this area was never as severe as that of the Korok Forest. With that said, this is entirely anecdotal, and I’d love to see some raw performance figures to confirm or deny these suspicions.

Either way, if you happen to own a copy of Breath of the Wild for the Wii U or Nintendo Switch, you may as well give the latest update a shot. That is, unless the prospect of downloading a 167MB update is entirely unfeasible for you at this point in time. In that case, I’m really not sure what can or should be done in your situation. Sorry.
