Here’s the plot for the second live action Sonic movie

Mild trailer-esque spoilers below

Sonic the Hedgehog came out in early 2020 and managed to sneak in a pretty good box office showing: and was apparently enough of a hit on home video to strike up a deal for a sequel. Thankfully the same creative team is returning, so there’s a chance it’ll be just as authentic as the first.

With some new plot details leaked via the US copyright catalog, I think the chances of that air of authenticity is even higher.

Mild synopsis spoilers below:

So we already knew that Knuckles was going to make it in, but the copyright database is basically a tell-all, and highlights how much of a recreation of the games the sequel is going to be.

First up, Tom and Maddie (the main humans from the first film outside of Jim Carrey’s Robotnik) are “on vacation,” which could mean this one is going to lean even more into CGI than the first. Then you have the wrinkle of Robotnik likely tricking Knuckles into a search for the Chaos Emerald[s], with Sonic and Tails (who was introduced in a credits scene on the other side of the equation.

Here’s a full recap:

After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home while they go on vacation. But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr. Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands. Being directed by Jeff Fowler, and starring Jim Carrey, James Marsden, and Ben Schwartz.

Uh yeah I’m into this. If it can keep the same tone as the original and cut out some of the human parts that fell flat, the sequel could get even more mainstream recognition, and set up even more sequels. I trust director Jeff Fowler to at least make it fun!
