Great news, Helldivers 2 fans! The special cape designed to commemorate the review bomb controversy after Sony required players to have a PSN account is complete, according to Arrowhead CCO John Pilestedt. Bad news: It’s not being released just yet.
In response to a fan question about the cape, Pilestedt confirmed that work on the special cosmetic item had been completed, but had no timeframe for a drop date, writing: “We want to find the right time to release it.”
What that means in terms of an actual launch date is unknown, and really could mean days, weeks, or even months before we get our hands on it.
The cape was originally teased by Pilestedt back on May 11, posting a cropped image of a cape. It is being created to commemorate one of Helldivers 2‘s darkest weekends when fans revolted against Sony’s decision to make PSN accounts mandatory for PC players. The decision was so unpopular that the game’s dedicated fanbase and players who truly love the game decided to take action and post thousands of negative reviews against the game on Steam, using it to show their anger with Sony.
Eventually, with the negativity being so widespread and the negative reviews tanking Helldivers 2 overall rating to “Overwhelmingly Negative” on Steam, Sony had to backpedal and admit defeat, scrapping the plan entirely.
While this may not be a pleasant memory for Sony or Arrowhead, it was an incredible moment for gamers, showing that if we fight hard enough for what we believe in, we can convince developers and publishers to change course. For that reason, plenty of Helldivers will wear this cape with pride whenever we finally get our hands on it in-game.
