A recent surge in permanent streamer bans in Dead by Daylight has highlighted the actions a group of hackers is allegedly taking to show that there’s a problem with the entire cheating and banning process within developer Behaviour Interactive’s walls.
This all started with a well-known Dead by Daylight streamer called Griff, who received a permanent account ban out of nowhere. After being told the decision was final, fans kept pushing Behaviour Interactive to investigate further, and the developer realized that it had banned the streamer due to a hacker using cheats under his username. Instead of banning the hacker, though, the developer banned the streamer.

Content creator Choy has made a video that thoroughly explains what has happened. There are more examples of streamers being impersonated with nothing but their username and receiving permanent bans, but that’s not all the hackers have been able to pull off.
In one case shown in the video, a hacker thought a developer at Behaviour Interactive was watching them, so they stole stream assets from a streamer and banned that streamer within three matches. Now, there are reports of all sorts of players, some of whom don’t even stream, being banned because hackers have done something similar to them.
According to Choy, these hackers want to show the community that the developer needs better banning processes in place because the current system can be easily abused. It’s a noble thought, but regardless of their intentions, the hackers have indeed shone a light on this broken system and how it needs sorting out.
While most casual players won’t likely become targets of this group, small streamers can use face cams and Vtuber rigs to make their streams unique and help avoid this happening to them. As someone who plays a lot of Dead by Daylight, I feel disappointed and let down because so many fans have had their days ruined by this, and there should be a better system in place to catch hackers.
If you are affected by a ban, Choy pointed out how important it is to format your device before playing the game again. Behavior Interactive places pings on hardware that will automatically ban a player if that device is used again. Formatting the device should remove this ping.
Outside of this growing hacker problem, Dead by Daylight is in a great space. Lara Croft joins the game in mid-July, and many more chapters are planned for the rest of the year. Hopefully, this issue can be addressed so it doesn’t mar what should be an exciting year for new content in the game.
