Hey look what GameStop.com is trying to sell us — a standalone 250 GB hard drive for the Xbox 360 for $129.99!

On February 14, we ran a story with the headline “No 250 GB 360 hard drive planned outside of bundles.” This was based on a quote from Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg, who told Joystiq “We’re always evaluating, but for now we feel like the 120 is serving us very well as the standard offering, and then having the 250 as a limited edition is a good balance.”

These magical 250 HDDs would be relegated to bundles, like the one released for Modern Warfare 2 last year, and the forthcoming Final Fantasy XIII bundle.

It seems Greenberg is making us out to be liars, or GameStop is putting phantom inventory on its Web site. We’ll check in with Microsoft for an update, but this does seem a bit suspicious. I mean, isn’t $129.99 for a 250 GB hard drive a little inexpensive for Microsoft? We are talking about the same folks who sold us 120 GB of space for $149.99, and before that 20 GB for one-hundred-effin-dollars, right?

[Thanks, Patrick!]

[Update: In light of the GameStop listing, Microsoft told us today “We have nothing to announce at this time.”]
