You never know how something is going to evolve
It’s becoming increasingly difficult, if not impossible, to predict what goes viral.
No one could have guessed, back in the era of when Epic Games was touting Fortnite as a PVE experience (which is now a less popular submode called “Save the World”), that it would completely pivot to battle royale and help define the entire genre alongside of PUBG. A former Epic Games director agrees.
Before Rod Fergusson became the current head of Gears of War developer The Coalition, he was director of production at Epic. Speaking to Game Informer, he notes that he “would have canceled Fortnite” when it was in its Save the World incarnation if it was his call. Fergusson is “happy” for the game’s success, but “when it was Save the World, that was a project that had some challenges…at the time, that game would not have passed my bar.”
Given the general tepid response to Save the World (and how it’s almost never in the conversation when “Fornite” is mentioned), this makes a hell of a lot of sense.
