FFXIV: All hairstyles and how to get them

Time for a trim

If you’re looking to customize your character in Final Fantasy XIV, one of the easiest ways to stand out from the crowd is by getting a fresh new haircut. There are a lot of hairstyles available from the start, but also new ones that can be unlocked or purchased.

Recommended Videos

These new hairstyles come from a variety of sources, some of which are free, while others will cost you some Gil. If you’re in a hurry and not short on funds, you can purchase most of these on the Marketboard. They’re usually sold for a pretty high price, but if you’ve got some time, you can get them through other means instead.

How to change your hairstyle in Final Fantasy XIV

Jandelaine, the Aesthetician in Final Fantasy XIV
Screenshot by Destructoid

In order to unlock the ability to change your hair in Final Fantasy XIV, you’ll need to do a couple of things:

  • Reach level 15 with a Disciple of War or Magic class
  • Complete the level 15 MSQ quest “Call of the Sea”

Once you’ve done these, head to Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks and pick up the side quest “Beauty Is Only Scalp Deep”, which will unlock the Aesthetician, Jandelaine.

Each time you want to change your hair (or other things about your appearance, such as face paint or tattoos), you’ll need to interact with a Crystal Bell. These can be found in any of the Inn Rooms across Eorzea or placed inside your own apartment or house. Changing your hairstyle will cost you 2,000 Gil each time.

To get your own Crystal Bell, you can either purchase one on the Marketboard or make your own. You’ll need to have Master Blacksmith III recipes unlocked, and the recipe requires the following ingredients:

  • 1 Titanium Alloy Ingot
  • 1 Birch Lumber
  • 1 Wildfowl Feather
  • 2 Fire Clusters
  • 1 Earth Cluster

Most hairstyles appear the same on both male and female characters, although some have distinct differences, and there are even some that are male- or female-specific. I’ll note those that have gender differences below.

How to get the Half Times Two hairstyle in FFXIV
Screenshot by Destructoid

As of patch 7.15, a new hairstyle called “A Half Times Two” has been added to FFXIV. This hairstyle is obtained by completing The Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic) and can be exchanged for 49 Clouddark Demimateria II from Uah’shepya in Solution Nine. Clouddark Demimateria will drop when the duty itself is successfully completed, and the hairstyle can be found in Uah’shepya’s “Sublime Curiosities” sub-section.

This hairstyle is tradeable, so you will find some for purchase on the Marketboard. However, due to the difficulty associated with getting it and how popular the very pretty hairstyle is likely to be, the price of the unlockable style is likely to be incredibly high for some time.

Hairstyles from PvP

There are two hairstyles up for grabs in exchange for Wolf Marks earned playing PvP. These can be obtained by talking to the Mark Quartermaster in Wolves’ Den Pier (X:4.4, Y:6.0) and cost 18,000 Wolf Marks each:

  • Styled for Hire
  • Fashionably Feathered

Hairstyles from The Firmament

There are three hairstyles available through taking part in activities in The Firmament. These are possible drops from Fetes or otherwise obtained using Skybuilders Scrips. All three hairstyles look the same for both males and females. As these are exchangeable, they can be sold on the Marketboard.

Each hairstyle costs 1,800 Skybuilders Scrips, and to get them, you’ll need to talk to Enie within The Firmament (X:12.0, Y:14.0):

  • Modern Legend
  • Controlled Chaos
  • Saintly Style

Hairstyles from The Tower at Paradigm’s Breach

The Tower at Paradigm’s Breach, the final Alliance Raid in the Nier series, is the only duty with hairstyles as a possible drop. There are two that are guaranteed to drop after the final boss. They appear in the shared Treasure Chest, so you’ll have to compete with all other players to get them.

These can be sold on the Marketboard and usually are relatively cheap. They look the same on both male and female characters:

  • Battle-ready Bobs
  • Scanning For Style

Hairstyles from Island Sanctuary

At the time of writing, there are two hairstyles available from Island Sanctuary. Each of these hairstyles costs 6,000 Seafarer’s Cowries and can be obtained from the Horrendous Hoarder (X:12.6, Y:28.3). They look the same on both males and females.

These hairstyles are only obtainable from Island Sanctuary and cannot be purchased on the Marketboard:

  • Tall Tails
  • Practical Ponytails

Hairstyles from Treasure Maps

Although there aren’t many hairstyles that are exclusively gained as drops from Treasure Dungeons, Dawntrail has added two that can be obtained in this way. These are also tradeable, which means you can purchase them on the Marketboard as well, but they come with a hefty price tag soon after they’re added. However, this price does go down pretty quickly, depending on the popularity of the style.

These two hairstyles are gained from Cenote Ja Ja Gural, which is accessed using Timeworn Br’aaxskin Maps:

  • It Takes Two
  • Doing the Wave

Some hairstyles are part of the rewards for time-limited events, for completing certain objects or otherwise rewarded as part of community events. These are untradeable:

  • The Final Fantasy XV collaboration event, A Nocturne for Heroes, will reward Lucian Locks when completed.
  • Taking part in a Ceremony of Eternal Bonding will reward the Eternal Bonding hairstyle. For females, this is a halo plait with flowers, while for males, this is a slick side-parted hairstyle.
  • During community events, one of the prizes that is always up for grabs is the Strife hairstyle. This hairstyle cannot be worn by Viera or Hrothgar players.
