When Animal Crossing‘s Villager was revealed as one of the newcomers for the upcoming Super Smash Bros. games on Wii U and 3DS, fans of the quirky life simulator were pleased to see the character bringing his bug net and slingshot into the foray, but many questioned the choice of showcasing only a male Villager. Especially considering Animal Crossing‘s diverse audience and Super Smash Bros.‘ general roster gender disparity, it would have made a lot of sense to lead with a female Villager.

In today’s update on SmashBros.com, four of the Villager skins have been shown, and the split is a perfect 50/50. Joining the black-eyed, bowl cut male Villager who has been shown in all of the previous Villager screenshots are a blue-eyed male Villager, a blue/green-eyed female Villager, and a twinkly-eyed, pink-haired female Villager.

Whether this was planned from the beginning or done in response to fan reaction, we will probably never know. Personally, I would guess that the idea for both male and female Villagers was there all along, if only because it would make very little sense not to do that.
