Fans still clamoring for a Simpsons: Hit & Run remake as the game turns 20

Mmmmmm...remake.

Us older gamers are starting to feel the crooked hand of time on our shoulders, as another classic reaches a milestone. The Simpsons: Hit & Run ā€“ the yellow family’s parody of GTA ā€“ recently turned 20 years old, and now, more than ever, fans are crying out for an official remake.

In a recent post on Twitter/X (as spotted by The Gamer), the PlayStation UK account posted a clip of the menu screen from the beloved Simpsons game to mark two decades.

In response, many commenting now seem to be pleading for a remake of the iconic PS title. Or, if not a remake or remaster, then perhaps a re-release, with one user asking Sony to “make it playable on the PS4/5.”

They are having a cow, man

Despite the game’s popularity, there’s never been any attempt to bring it kicking and screaming into the modern gaming era. While one person did remake The Simpsons: Hit & Run in Unreal Engine 5, it’s sadly a project that’s not being released for public consumption.

This is almost certainly due to the legal headache of creating a Simpsons video game, either a remake or something new entirely. Since Disney bought Fox, which owns the Simpsons brand, in 2019, you can imagine the litigation one would need to go through to create something using such protected intellectual property.

Even one of the main writers show runners has said they’d like to see Hit & Run make a comeback. There’s no telling what will happen with the animated family in terms of video game adaptations, but maybe the Disney corporation will cave in one day.
