Exotic Class Item Attunement is coming to Destiny 2, Bungie confirms

According to Bungie’s official Twitter account, farming Exotic class items should be much more satisfying in Destiny 2 at some point in the future. Notably, we’ll soon be able to perform Exotic Class Item attunement, tweaking the odds of getting meaningfully powerful drops well ahead of time.

Attunement isn’t a new concept in Destiny 2, of course. It’s a passive system that allows players to fine-tune their future drops and make it more likely that they are of a specific type, as previously seen with the BRAVE weapon set during the Into the Light era of Destiny. BRAVE weapons’ attunement is due to make a triumphant return due to how popular and useful it was, and it will seemingly extend to cover Exotic Class Items, too.

The specifics of how, exactly, Exotic Class Item attunement might work haven’t been revealed yet, but the fact that Bungie is even considering it to begin with is a huge deal. Exotic Class Items were introduced as part of Destiny 2: The Final Shape, and getting one to drop for the first time includes a fairly involved quest that has to be completed with one more player in tow.

Engaging stuff, to be sure, but since these items drop with a very wide array of Exotic perks, getting a genuinely useful Class Item was no mean feat. Attunement should, in theory, make it easier for players to get the specifics perks they want without making the whole system altogether trivial.

Eagle-eyed viewers might notice that the work-in-progress interface shared by Bungie on Twitter has a few $ symbols in the title. One of the community managers, dmg04, aptly concluded that this might rub some players the wrong way, and decided to chime in on the matter before any potential drama could unfold:

So, all is well, and Bungie does not intend to monetize Exotic Class Item attunement at this time. Granted, there’s no precedent for something of the kind in Destiny 2, as the game has historically monetized expansion pack features, abilities, and cosmetics, but it’s good that dmg04 would chime in on the matter regardless.

Curiously, a non-insignificant number of players has seemingly dropped Destiny 2 in lieu of Digital Extremes’ Warframe, where friendly members of the community have rallied to welcome Guardians on their new adventure. Since Bungie has been having a hard time as of late, again, thanks to an almost ridiculous number of layoffs, it’s not too strange to see Destiny 2 shedding players as well. Still a huge shame, though, and it’s going to take time before the community can trust Bungie once again. Features such as the one outlined above are bound to help, of course.
