Believe it or not, today is “Goku Day” in Japan, celebrating the existence of the pop culture icon and Dragon Ball protagonist. The reason May 9 is chosen as the fated date is due to the phonetic pronunciation of May – “Go” or “Go gatsu” – and nine – “Ku” – hence “Go-Ku.” Well, it works just as well as May the Fourth at any rate.

To celebrate, publisher Bandai Namco has put together a fun trailer focusing on the spiky-haired lead as he appears in their own Dragon Ball FighterZ. In the video, Goku – who infamously features on the roster multiple times in an abundance of different forms – recreates his most memorable fights and encounters, using the game’s engine and cutscenes to tell the story of his life. That’s pretty smart, kudos to the production team.

Alongside this video, Kid Goku (GT) will also be made available today as DBFZ‘s latest DLC character. So if you didn’t have enough options for all of your Kamehameha needs, now you got one more.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is an excellent title which recreates the look, sound and overall feel of its source material, marrying it to tight and satisfying fighting mechanics and gorgeous, colourful visuals. Still an incredibly popular game on the competitive circuit, Dragon Ball FighterZ is currently gearing up for another successful appearance at EVO in August.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is available now on PS4, PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
