As if our knuckles weren’t already red ‘n’ raw from the past two years of street-scrollin’ smackers, Modus Games has announced that grandaddy brawler Double Dragon will be making its grand return in July, in the form of the previously announced Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons.

Developed by studio Secret Base, Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons offers a new twist on the classic side-scrolling franchise, incorporating a permanent tag-team mechanic, a roster of new and returning heroes and villains, and even challenging roguelike elements. Billy Lee, Jimmy Lee, Marian and others will once again be doling out vigilante justice to the warriors of the night. Cleaning out the New York City of 199x as only they know how: At the business end of a back elbow > headbutt combo.

Sporting a dynamic mission function, Double Dragon Gaiden will task the player with clearing out multiple sectors of the city, taking down gang bosses, and leveling up their squad of scrappers. Earn cash through extended combos and successive battles, before spending those hard-fought gains on upgrades and power-ups for your team. And should you fall in battle, simply regroup, restrategize, and return to the fight, a little stronger, a little wiser, and a little more determined.

It’s interesting to see Secret Base adapt the Double Dragon formula in a semi-roguelike capacity, offering new twists on one of the beat-’em-up genre’s pioneer titles. And we won’t have to wait all that long to find out how well these interesting mechanics synergize. Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons launching July 27 on PlayStation, PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch platforms.
