“Doom can run on anything” is a classic internet saying/meme that reflects how people have easily ported id Software’s revolutionary first-person shooter to numerous devices, not just gaming consoles. And now, the tradition continues on Nintendo’s Alarmo.
Twitter/X user @GaryOderNichts recently posted a video of Doom running on Alarmo, Nintendo’s new digital alarm clock. This is bizarre yet fascinating, as you can clearly see him struggling to use the Alarmo’s buttons to play through the iconic first level of Doom. It may look weird and clunky but, most important of all, it’s 100% possible.
The port is mind-blowing, but it’s not without its flaws, since @GaryOderNichts clarified that it currently has no audio support, due to size restrictions. Curiously enough, he also revealed that “it’s possible to load the shareware version of Doom entirely from USB, without modifying the Alarmo”. As expected, people reacted to this video with a mix of fascination and excitement, mainly because @GaryOderNichts is keeping the tradition alive with this Alarmo port.
Remembering some of the weirdest Doom ports
We can now add Nintendo’s Alarmo to the long list of items that can seemingly run Doom. Needless to say, this is quite an extensive list, and Alarmo is not even the most unconventional piece of hardware in it. For example, in 2022 vimpo on YouTube managed to play Doom to his computer’s keyboard. Another fascinating port comes from popular retro gaming YouTuber LGR, who ported the FPS into a Ti-83 calculator.
Other notable examples include: A MacBook Pro Touch Bar, a toy chainsaw, other video games – like Sonic Mania or The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind – and even a pregnancy test (although this one is actually a video and not a playable game) Doom can truly run on anything so next time a company releases a new piece of electronic hardware, you can be 100% sure that someone will try to play this classic FPS in it, and they will most likely succeed.
