Does Sonic Superstars have online multiplayer?

Long-distance relationship goals.

Sonic Superstars is a classic-style Sonic game that invites you to play alongside three friends. It supports local couch co-op regardless of whether you’re playing it on the Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or PC. But while the offline mode is confirmed for Sonic Superstars, can we say the same for online multiplayer? Well, yes and no.

Sonic Superstars does not support online multiplayer for its story campaign. It only allows offline play, and it doesn’t look like that’s going to change anytime soon. According to the Sonic creative officer, Takashi Iizuka, there are no plans to include online multiplayer because it goes too damn fast.

“Even in one frame you can move so far in the level,” Iizuka told VGC in a June 2023 interview. “We didn’t want to put this feature in where there would be lag, and then people wouldn’t have fun because of the technical requirements. So we wanted to keep it to that local, shared experience.”

Does it have any online mode?

Here is where things get tricky with the initial question. Sonic Superstars does have online multiplayer support, but only for Battle Mode. The mode is Sega and Arzest answering the question: “What if we blend Sonic with Battle Royale?” Battle Mode lets you take a custom character into an online PvP arena where you race, collect stars, or fight in three short matches. The mode includes online matchmaking as well as an option to host or join a game using a generated code.

The top winners of Battle Mode walk away with a hefty chunk of Medals. You can also play the mode offline and against bots. Actually, I played against bots online as well. The mode doesn’t seem very popular. Maybe interest will rise, but I have a feeling most players are interested in playing the more enjoyable campaign with friends. There are also better ways to earn Medals in Sonic Superstars, just check out our guide.

Online multiplayer co-op is still possible in Sonic Superstars for PC users

Sonic Superstars is supported by Steam’s Remote Play Together feature. When playing the game, bring up your Steam friends list and choose to invite someone to play the game via Remote Play. That’s one way you can play the game online co-op. You may also consider trying Parsec, an app that lets people enjoy offline multiplayer games online. Keep in mind that Parsec and Remote Play Together are good options but not perfect, and you may experience some lag while playing.
