The film’s production is still on hold, though
While James Gunn may not be returning to the director’s chair for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, his personal stamp may still be left on the eventual sequel. Sean Gunn, brother of James, and the Gilmore Girls actor who portrays Kraglin in the Guardians films as well as performing the role of Rocket on-set claimed that Disney intends to use James Gunn’s original script.
Speaking to Tulsa World, Sean Gunn had this to say regarding the threequel, which has since halted production after the firing of James Gunn over old, inappropriate tweets:
“I don’t really know yet what’s going on with ‘Guardians 3.’ I know that Disney still wants to make the movie. I know that they have every intention of using the script that my brother wrote. Obviously, that was a very unfortunate situation for everybody, most of all him, but I am also somebody who had been preparing to spend half a year making that movie and now that’s up in the air.”
While a primary concern over this scandal had to do with the firing of James Gunn enabling bad alt-right actors such as Mark Cernovich to weaponize old social media posts out of context, fans of Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequel were also worried that the filmmaker’s voice would be lost in replacing him as director—after all, the iconic soundtracks from the two films were handpicked by Gunn and written into the screenplays themselves.
With Gunn’s script, and likely his song picks, apparently being retained by the studio, the fans (and Dave Bautista) can rest easy for now. Still, it will be difficult for the cast and crew to band together under a new leader on set with morale apparently low to get excited for a film that will essentially have a scab director. With the Guardians subfranchise being a big moneymaker for Disney and Marvel Studios, this project won’t stay dormant forever, and we have to assume that the search for a new director is underway.
