Diablo 4 Shako bug sends ripples throughout Sanctuary

A recent Diablo 4 patch made it so Helltide Mystery Chests could drop Unique items, including the incredibly rare Uber Uniques. Unfortunately, the patch had some issues leading to Uber Unique drops being completely disabled for a period of time. Blizzard has since fixed the bug and re-enabled them, but not before having some pretty devastating consequences.

Let’s take a look at the fallout from the Diablo 4 Shako bug and some details pertaining to the situation.

What was the Diablo 4 Shako bug?

First, let’s talk about how insanely rare Uber Uniques like Shako are. While Blizzard hasn’t confirmed the actual drop rate for them, we know they are super rare. In fact, despite millions of players in the game, only a handful of each exist even though the game was released over a month ago. Some estimates are putting the drop rate around literally 1 in 1,000,000. The Uber Uniques are very powerful items so they definitely shouldn’t be easy to obtain, but they are a bit too rare to plan a build around.

The recent patch intended to add a new way for players to potentially get Unique drops, including the Uber Uniques. The Helltide Mystery Chests can now drop them, making one of the popular farm methods in the game even more rewarding. Unfortunately, when the patch first dropped, a bug made it so the Shako Uber Unique had a much higher drop chance from the Helltide Mystery Chests.

When the bug was discovered, Blizzard immediately disabled all Uber Unique drops until a fix was implemented. A hotfix went live on July 7th that fixed the bug and re-enabled the drops.

So what is the Diablo 4 Shako bug fallout?

Even though Blizzard fixed the bug pretty quickly, a handful of players acquired a Shako. In fact, Blizzard confirmed 142 accounts received an Uber Unique in the time between the patch being released and Blizzard disabling them. In all actuality, it’s likely zero or at the most one or two would have dropped during this time.

Even after the hotfix, Blizzard has confirmed they would not be removing those that dropped during the bug. In other words, some players are unhappy because they chose not to partake in an exploit, though there was no punishment for doing so.

It’s possible Blizzard will tweak the drop rates for these incredibly rare items. In fact, I’d say it’s likely that they do. It’s always fun to farm hard-to-find items, but when the drop rate is this low it can just be frustrating.
