Recently, Eilas Toufexis, the voice behind Adam Jensen from the later Deus Ex games, posted a heartfelt goodbye to the character he’s best known for. With hopes of a new entry fading fast, the actor has since said he’s been asked to ease up when talking about the Mankind Divided and Human Revolution protagonist.
In an interview with PCGamesN, Toufexis likened the current state of the video game industry to a “disaster zone.” Referring to the continuing onslaught of studios shutting down, projects being shelved, and conglomerates laying staff off, the actor opines about how things are at the moment.
With regard to Deus Ex, Toufexis said he never heard anything official after 2016. Every piece of information that came to him about the franchise was “unofficial, from friends or acquaintances.” He also mentions how developer Eidos contacted him in 2020 to ask him to “stop talking about Adam Jensen in interviews and podcasts.”
Imagine giving Jensen a gag order
The response goes on to say that the reason the developer doesn’t want him talking about the character is because “they wanted people to focus on other things from the studio.”
Last month, it was announced that parent company Embracer Group allegedly shuttered an in-progress Deus Ex game. This was on top of 97 people being laid off, which is a headline many of us have sadly become used to seeing these past 12 months or so.
Fortunately, Toufexis is still busy with work. In a post on Twitter recently, he said he’s currently working on a couple of games, but “I’d expect them all to be canceled before the end of the week or something.” He adds that he’s doing fine, though: “I’m very lucky to have many irons in the fire. Games are just in a weird place right now.” True that.
