Destiny 2 leaks allege a downshift in seasonal content

Reports are starting to surface about what Destiny 2's future might look like.

The futureĀ is notĀ lookingĀ soĀ bright forĀ Destiny 2, as some leaks allege that Bungie is scaling back yearly content in aĀ majorĀ way.Ā The game willĀ supposedlyĀ move from the currentĀ three-Episodes-a-yearĀ format to two six-month seasons, with smaller DLCs replacing the major expansions players are used to.Ā

This report comesĀ in the wake ofĀ Bungie’s recent layoffs and partial Sony consolidation. While theĀ DestinyĀ community isĀ no stranger toĀ a seasonal content model, it has typicallyĀ been presentedĀ in four seasons spaced out annually.Ā Of course,Ā The Final ShapeĀ expansion traded those four seasons for three longer Episodes, the first of which hasĀ been receivedĀ with mixed results due toĀ time gating and a lack of content.Ā If the leak is correct, thenĀ it sounds likeĀ playersĀ are going toĀ have a lot more time on their hands betweenĀ majorĀ beats.

Notable insider Jeff Grubb shared what he knew aboutĀ Destiny 2‘s future following the layoffs at Bungie on Giant Bomb’sĀ Game Mess Mornings show. Grubb noted that players should expectĀ DestinyĀ content to scale back, saying, “When it comes toĀ Destiny 2, the expectation, I believe internally, is that the future content will be lighter, smaller, to take less time than whatĀ The Final ShapeĀ did, require fewer people. So, there will be expansions and updates, but they will be… not a shell of their former selves but they’ll definitely have that vibe about them.”

Grubb elaborated on how expansion content was allegedlyĀ beingĀ viewed internally at Bungie, saying: “Those expansions forĀ Destiny 2? Expansion, they’re not even using the term internally anymore. They’re calling them ‘content packs.’ So, that should put it in perspective like what you should expect fromĀ Destiny 2Ā going forward.”Ā

While the initial report sounded bleak,Ā The Game PostĀ covered anĀ alleged leakĀ from aĀ previously-provedĀ reliable source that may add additional context to whatĀ Destiny 2‘s future might look like. The leak maintains that, following the three Episodes already revealed,Ā Destiny 2Ā would see its content delivery restructure again;Ā moving to two seasons annually, each lasting six months.

The leaker went intoĀ additional detail, noting that a DLC would appear around the same time as each season and that,Ā aside from theĀ battle pass, seasons would become free.Ā The leak also laid out how these changes would translate to gameplay, claiming that each season, players would “[p]lay base-level activities to earn seasonal gear,” and thenĀ that gear would then be usedĀ in a “Rally Event.” These Rally Events would happen twice each season and feature new PvE and PvP activities.Ā All the while,Ā the leaker alleges thatĀ narrative would take a back seat, with story missions disappearing in favor of one introductory mission setting the scene for the given season.

While this information does come from notable sources, it should still be taken with a grain of salt, as Bungie hasn’tĀ publiclyĀ announced any of the information from the aforementioned reports. Still, if the reports turn out to be wholly accurate,Ā it paintsĀ a bleak picture forĀ Destiny 2‘s future.
