By this time, it’s no secret that the Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, is a major hit for FromSoftware. Now, The Witcher III developer CD Projekt has congratulated the developer, sharing art of Geralt slaying Mohg, the boss guarding the way to the Elden Ring DLC.
For nearly a decade, the Witcher III‘s Blood and Wine expansion held the crown as the highest-reviewed DLC ever. Though by only a digit or two, Shadow of the Erdtree dethroned it, as you can see in the comparison between the two on Metacritic — and that didn’t go unnoticed.
CD Projekt Red took to X via the official Witcher video game account to congratulate FromSoftware with an absolutely badass image of Geralt taking down the Lord of Blood.
”For the last 8 years, The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine had the honor of being the best-reviewed expansion for a role-playing game – but [Elden Ring] gets to wear that crown now,” reads the message on X. “Congratulations to the entire team at [FromSoftware] on their stellar work!”
CD Project Red pauses work to fight Mohg
It’s been a long time coming, but not even The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine could have reigned forever (though, as a fan, you probably could have fooled me). Nonetheless, a new king has been crowned, and for good reason. Our own Chris Carter and Steven Mills gave the stellar DLC a 9.5/10 rating, with the latter saying, “even though my expectations were high, Shadow of the Erdtree still managed to exceed them.”
Excitement for the DLC, which is available today, is at its peak. In fact, not even the developers at CD Projekt Red could ignore it for long. The account followed up the Geralt art piece with a collage of screenshots, all apparently showing team members’ characters on standby in Mohgwyn Palace, presumably before the launch of the DLC.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty didn’t quite reach the lofty heights of either aforementioned DLC, even though it performed quite well. With The Witcher 4 in production, perhaps CD Projekt Red will someday vie for the crown once again.
