Can you play Spider-Man 2 on PS4?

Is Spidey swinging his way onto PS4?

The PlayStation Spider-Man series has quickly become one of the most important franchises for Sony’s console. Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales both released on the PS4 to a wave of critical acclaim. It’s understandable then that many PS4 gamers want to play the latest game, Spider-Man 2, on the last generation platform, so here’s what we know.

Is Spider-Man 2 playable on the PS4?

In short, no. Spider-Man 2 cannot be played on either the base PlayStation 4 or the PS4 Pro. Unlike Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which was released simultaneously on the PS4 and PS5, the latest game is exclusive to the current gen system.

This is because Sony has moved on from releasing games on both the PlayStation 4 and 5. For the first few years of the PlayStation 5’s life cycle, many big games came out on both consoles. This included heavy hitters such as Gran Turismo 7, Horizon: Forbidden West, and God of War: Ragnarok.

However, this isn’t the norm. In past generations, Sony has typically cut ties to the previous console much quicker. The PS5 transition period was exceptionally long compared to the PS3 to PS4 transition, for example.

While it’s possible more Sony games may receive simultaneous PS4 and PS5 releases, expect these to be fewer and farther between, if at all. It’s unlikely that many more Sony titles of a similar scope to Spider-Man 2 will be released on the PS4.

The good news is that all of the Insomniac Spider-Man games are playable on the PS5 with current-gen enhancements. So you can play the entire series on a single console.
