Baldur’s Gate 3 has 12 core classes for players to choose from, but the most traditional magical class of them all is the Wizard. If you want the most varied magical experience in the game, you can choose this one, which has a whopping eight subclasses for you to choose from.
Best Wizard subclasses in Baldur’s Gate 3
While there are eight Wizard subclasses available in Baldur’s Gate 3, not all of them are worth your time. There are about four that are the most recommended classes from my time playing as a Wizard. You can choose your school of magic speciality once you reach level two. Here are the ones I recommend.
Abjuration
Abjuration may not seem like the most alluring school of magic to specialize in from first glance. After all, its main focus is on the ward spells that boost your defense and the like. However, it becomes exceedingly powerful as time goes on.
You’ll be able to protect not just yourself but your entire party from attacks and heal in a way. This is the only subclass that makes up for the fragile nature of the Wizard.
Necromancy
By far the wildest subclass, becoming a Necromancer is what I went with as a Wizard. This is another one that starts out slow, but gets fantastic at level six whenever you can summon an undead army to help you out.
Foes won’t know what to do with themselves when you have an army of skeletons taking the hits for you. Pair that with your familiar and you’ll have one of the largest parties possible. In addition to this core feature, you also get some neat necrotic spells that are worthwhile.
Divination
There is nothing quite like Divination in all of Baldur’s Gate 3, and you could even argue that it is a little too overpowered in some ways. The idea here is that your specialization is reading the future. As such, you are able to collect two dice every day.
These dice are randomly generated, but they are basically on-demand replacements for battles. Let’s say you roll a one on an important attack and would otherwise miss; you could replace it with one of these special dice and turn your fate around.
Receive low dice for that day? No worries, as you can even use it on enemies too, to make them worse off.
Transmutation
The Transmutation subclass is by far one of the most versatile and unique in the game. They specialize in Alchemy, so if you like to craft and make lots of money, this is the one for you. In addition, it has some great buffs for the party.
My favorite part about Transmutation, though, is its ability to shapeshift like a Druid later in its levels. This is a rare and impressive ability that can radically change your gameplay.
