Best Weapons in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3), Ranked

Scour the Sword Coast!

There’s so much to do and see in Baldur’s Gate 3 that it makes me wonder if it’s possible to see it all in even a handful of campaigns. This goes doubly for the weapons, armor, and accessories found littered all throughout the Sword Coast.

If you have any hope whatsoever of ridding Faerun of its Absolutist scourge, you’ll need a supply of increasingly powerful weapons. So, like a vendor skulking the back alleys of the Lower City, it’s our goal to let you know what weapons are worth keeping if you run into them or which ones are worth keeping your eye out for if you haven’t.

10. Ketheric’s Warhammer

Ketheric’s Warhammer is a weapon that can be looted from the final boss of Act 2. It can be wielded in either one hand or two; as a one-handed weapon, it dishes out 1d8 + 1, plus your Strength modifier of Bludgeoning damage, while as a two-handed weapon, it inflicts 1d10 + 1, plus your Strength modifier, also of Bludgeoning damage. It also deals 1d4 of Psychic damage.

If you happen to have Proficiency with Warhammers, by equipping Ketheric’s Warhammer, you’ll unlock the Backbreaker, Concussive Smash, and Weakening Strike abilities.

9. Gold Wyrmling Staff

Admittedly, the Gold Wyrmling Staff might not seem like anything special at first glance. But, it can be wielded as a one-handed weapon or two-handed weapon. If wielded as a one-handed weapon, it inflicts 1d6 + 1 of Bludgeoning damage plus your Strength modifier. As a two-handed weapon, the pain is a bit higher, as it dishes out 1d8 + 1 of Bludgeoning damage, plus your Strength modifier. What’s more, it also deals 1d4 of Fire damage, which is related to its special perk, granting your character access to Fire Bolt.

If you have Proficiency with Quarterstaves, you’ll unlock the Topple ability.

8. Moonlight Glaive

The Moonlight Glaive is a weapon only awarded to you if you decide to spare the Nightsong. It is a +2 glaive with a permanent Light effect and inflicts 1d10 + 2 Slashing damage in addition to your Strength modifier. To add, this weapon also inflicts an extra 1d4 of Radiant damage.

If you have Proficiency with Glaives, equipping this weapon will earn you the Rush Attack, Lacerate, Brace (Melee), and Moonlight Butterflies abilities.

7. Githyanki Greatsword

I found this weapon helpful, even in the hands of a non-Githyanki. But, if you were to equip Lae’zel with this uncommon greatsword, it would dish out 1d4 Psychic damage, in addition to 2d6 + 1 Slashing damage plus your Strength modifier. You can loot this weapon from Sarth Baretha in the Mountain Pass (Act 1).

If you have Proficiency with Greatswords, equipping the Githyanki Greatsword will unlock the Pommel Strike, Lacerate, and Cleave abilities.

6. Halberd of Vigilance

The Halberd of Vigilance inflicts 1d10 + 2 Slashing damage in addition to your Strength modifier. It also inflicts 1d4 Force damage and comes with the Sentinel Weapon and Adroit Reflexes special perks.

If you have Proficiency with Halberds, you can unlock the Rush Attack, Lacerate, and Cleave abilities by equipping this weapon.

5. Gontr Mael

Gontr Mael is a legendary longbow that comes with the possibility of attacking enemies with a Guiding Bolt on a successful hit. It also unlocks the Celestial Haste ability to whoever wields it, which allows players to hasten themselves for five turns while avoiding the Lethargic status condition.

If you have Proficiency with Longbows, equipping this weapon in your main hand will unlock the Hamstring Shot, Brace (Ranged), and Bolt of Celestial Light abilities.

4. Duellist’s Prerogative

Duellist’s Prerogative is a legendary melee rapier that dishes out 1d8 + 3 damage in addition to your Strength or Dexterity modifier. If you equip this in one hand and leave your other hand empty, this weapon will result in a critical hit if you roll a 19. You’ll also get an additional reaction each turn. Lastly, if you make a successful melee hit, you’ll have the option to inflict additional Necrotic damage.

I found this one helpful if for no other reason than the Dueller’s Enthusiasm ability makes that additional reaction worth it. If you have Proficiency with Rapiers, equip this weapon to unlock the Flourish, Piercing Strike, and Weakening Strike abilities.

3. Selune’s Spear of Night / Shar’s Spear of Evening

Selune’s Spear of Night and Shar’s Spear of Evening are, like the goddesses themselves, two sides of the same coin. That said, you cannot obtain both — the Spear of Night is achieved by helping Shadowheart convert from Shar to Selune and sparing the Nightsong, while the Spear of Evening is obtained by killing the Nightsong. The Spear of Night comes with Selune’s Blessing, Darkvision, Moonbeam, and Moonmote, while the Spear of Evening comes with Shar’s Blessing, Blind Immunity, and Shar’s Darkness.

If you have Proficiency with Spears, you can unlock the Rush Attack, Maiming Strike, and Edge of Darkness (Spear of Evening only) abilities.

2. The Blood of Lathander

When I say The Blood of Lathander is a close second, I mean it. I missed it in my first campaign, but upon seeing its special perks, I wish I hadn’t. The Blood of Lathander comes with Lathander’s Blessing, which seems to act as a safeguard against being K.O.’d. It will revive your character upon reaching 0 HP, and any allies within 9m of said character will receive an additional 1-6 HP. It’s not much, but it definitely comes in handy during those nigh-impossible boss fights. If only I had this during the final boss. The Blood of Lathander is obtained at Creche Y’llek through a subquest, “Find the Blood of Lathander.”

If you have Proficiency with Maces, equip this weapon to unlock the Concussive Smash ability.

1. Balduran’s Giantslayer

It has been a hot minute since I completed my initial campaign, but I am almost certain this weapon was what propelled me to victory against the final boss. Balduran’s Giantslayer comes pre-packaged with two specials that can come in handy during various battles in Act 3: Giantslayer, which doubles the damage from your Strength modifier, and Giant Form, which adds 1d6 damage and 27 temporary HP, in addition to increasing your character’s overall size whilst active. It can be achieved by defeating Ansur

If you have Proficiency with Greatswords, equip this weapon to unlock the Pommel Strike, Lacerate, Cleave, and Topple the Big Folk abilities.
