Since Baldur’s Gate 3‘s launch in August 2023, the community has banded together to create mods ranging from race and class additions to small quality-of-life improvements between official patches. While modding is not officially supported right now, Larian Studios has openly encouraged the modding community and has been working on introducing support for some time.
As of today, an official statement in the Larian Studios Discord revealed the future of modding for Baldur’s Gate 3, saying it hopes to introduce the “initial stages” of modding support in the next big patch.
“We are working on official mod support, and have been for a while,” the statement says. “We want the very best for you, which includes establishing a pipeline that lets mod authors release their mods across different platforms. Together with the platform holders, we are working on making this a reality, and are forming a team to support mod curation. We’re aiming to offer modding support for things like classes, UI, customisation, spells, and certain assets and game mechanics.”
Following BG3’s sixth major patch and eighteenth hotfix, various bugs, glitches, and crashes began to surface, with one being the Script Extender modification not being compatible with the game’s latest version. Larian further explains that official mod support is on its way, including allowing mod authors to develop and release their mods for multiple platforms.
Although Larian plans to introduce the initial stages of modding support in patch seven, this update is several months away. In the meantime, on the same day as the Discord announcement, Larian released a nineteenth hotfix for Baldur’s Gate 3, fixing crashing issues with loading modded save games, among other performance issues and bugs.
As detailed in the Discord post, the primary reason for patch seven being several months away outlines their current tasks of working with platform holders and popular mod authors and forming a team to support mod curation. In short, no exact timeframes for this update are available yet. Although mod support is planned for the future, we may not see it until mid-to-late 2024.
