If only we could loot the giant chest he’s lugging around

Diablo 4 has three world bosses at the moment, one of which is the insanely cool looking Avarice The Gold Cursed. The massive beast literally spawns via a giant goblin portal. Fans of Diablo III will recognize the colossal creature, as he’s similar in appearance to Greed, the boss at the end of that game’s Treasure Realm.

We’ve hunted down Avarice The Gold Cursed and created this boss guide to help you track down and slay this beast.

Avarice The Gold Cursed boss location

All three world bosses in Diablo 4 share the same potential spawn locations. Each region in Sanctuary has a specialized area just for the bosses. These are the five areas in which Avarice The Gold Cursed can spawn:

  • The Crucible in Fractured Peaks
  • Caen Adar in Scosglen
  • Saraan Caldera in Dry Steppes
  • Fields of Desecration in Hawezar
  • Seared Basin in Kehjistan

One of the three world bosses spawn once every six to eight hours. If you have beaten the campaign, a notification will pop-up roughly 20 minutes before the world boss spawns. Just follow the world boss icon on your map, or put a pin on the location to create an easy path to follow.

Avarice The Gold Cursed world boss guide

Be prepared when fighting a world boss like Avarice The Gold Cursed.

Throughout the fight Avarice will cleave players in front of him with his mallet. He can also thrust his mallet forward, sending a rocky shockwave in a cone in front of him. Avarice has a wind up animation for this attack with his mallet, at which point you will want to make sure you are not in front of him.

The boss can also grab the giant chest he’s lugging around and hurl it at you. He then grabs it by the chain it is attached to and swings it around in a 360 degree area of affect. The chain itself does not damage you, but you will take massive damage if hit by the chest.

On occasion, Avarice will vomit a pile of gold beneath him in a large area. Although you may want to stand in the shiny gold pile, don’t. Despite the temptation, it actually deals massive damage over time.

Next, we have to watch out for the boss Portal Charge attack. He will summon a treasure portal and charge into it. You want to make sure you’re not standing between him and the portal when he charges. The portal will dematerialize and reappear after a few seconds in a new area. Avarice will then charge out of the portal, dealing damage on those he hits while charging.

Finally, we have to watch out for pillars. Avarice will spawn these pillars throughout the fight that will block your movement and also block and deflect incoming attacks. But this isn’t their only purpose. From time to time, Avarice will slam down his mallet. This creates a shockwave that breaks pillars and causes them to explode dealing massive damage. Make sure you move away from any pillars in the path of this shockwave.
