Apex Legends crashing on startup for Steam players

Awaiting a fix.

Apex Legends is crashing on start up for players who hop onto EA and Respawn Entertainment’s live-service multiplayer game. Steam players are not being able to move past the loading screen in Apex Legends. Respawn had released a patch yesterday that seemingly fixed the issue, but Apex Legends crash issues continue on persist for PC players.

Respawn Entertainment issued a statement last night on August 29 at 11:50 p.m. PT, highlighting that a patch to fix Apex Legends crashes on Steam has been rolled out. The developers also mentioned that this issue occurred due to a previous update.

Respawn also provided context behind the issue, explaining how the issue occurred due to “the first of several additional security updates” that the developer plans to roll out during the ongoing Shockwave season.

The security update “inadvertently labeled some friendly programs as malicious and was preventing players from launching the game.” Respawn says that it will be rolling out the update once the issue has been resolved. At the time of writing, the issue remains unresolved, despite 18 hours since Respawn’s statement.

Security has lately been the primary focus, with Respawn expanding its efforts to curb cheating in Apex Legends. There were over 200,000 accounts permanently banned for cheating between June and July 2024. In total, there are more than 6 million accounts banned in Apex Legends since its launch in 2019.

Respawn has also expanded its team to monitor, review, and take action against suspicious accounts that get reported for cheating in Apex Legends.
