Although there are plenty of species to discover in the Overworld, animals are limited to one variant type. While ocelots only exhibit spotted coats, wolves solely feature white-colored appearances. However, Minecraft’s dog update changes up this classic dynamic with eight variations, and we’re here to explain its new features.
What’s new in Minecraft dog update?
Each new wolf variant spans Minecraft’s various biomes, including the Badlands, Forest, and snowy environments. The original white-colored dog, now known as “the pale wolf,” continues to linger in the Taiga locations. But if you are looking for a specific type, you must venture to its corresponding area. Thanks to the Armored Paws update, all the new features are available in Bedrock and Java.
To see the new wolf types in the Minecraft dog update, here’s what to expect:
Rusty Wolf – Jungle biome
Spotted Wolf – Savanna biome
Black Wolf – Old Growth Pine Taiga
Striped Wolf – Badlands
Snowy Wolf – Grove biome
Ashen Wolf – Snowy Taiga
Woods Wolf – Forest biome
Chestnut Wolf – Old Growth Spruce Taiga
Some wolf variants may be more challenging to obtain, specifically with the Black Wolf’s night camouflage. Going out in the day is better for clearer visuals and safety from the hostile mobs. Moreover, the snowy biomes present Powder Snow, which acts as quicksand, so be mindful of your surroundings. Be sure to bring a few bones, too, to get the animals on your side.
Wolf breeding also changed alongside the Minecraft dog update, separating from the standard white-colored puppies. It could be possible to unlock one of the new variants this way, depending on which ones are used for reproduction.
For protection, the update introduces wolf armor for all these animals, similar to horse armor. Instead of the standard 20 health meter, mutts with equipped gear now include 40 hearts to maximize their life span. Armor can be mended over time with the latest Armadillo scutes without the need to take it on and off.
