All Mushroom Kingdom hidden treasure chests in Super Mario RPG

Secrets at the start of your adventure

Whether you’re playing the SNES classic or the 2023 remake, Super Mario RPG is loaded with secrets. From the very first town you enter in the game, you’ll find many hidden treasure chests to uncover. But even if you equip the Sensor Ring to nail down which rooms they’re hidden in, these can still be a pain to find if you’re just jumping around blindly.

#1: Under the Item Shop

This one’s likely the first hidden chest you’ll find, but I’ll cover it here for posterity’s sake. Under the item shop, you’ll meet an old toad who will say – to paraphrase – “hey, look for hidden chests.” Jump up in the middle as you’re prompted, and you’ll crack open the secret box.

#2: Under the Item Shop, again!

Now, in this exact same room, there’s another hidden treasure chest that’s actually really tricky to find. It’s in the rightmost corner, but Mario’s default jump just won’t cut it. To pop open this chest, wait for the old toad to walk to the corner of the room. Jump on his head, and then jump straight up. This will give you the height you need to find this chest, revealing another Frog Coin to take home with you.

#3: The hidden chest in the Mushroom Kingdom castle

This is another surprisingly tricky one to uncover. In the castle hallway that greets you as soon as you enter, you can find another secret above the door in leading towards the throne room. However, like the chest above, Mario’s default jump height won’t cut it. You’ll need to wait for a Toad to walk near the door, jump on its head, and then jump on the ledge above the door. Jump straight up in the middle of the ledge, and you’ll reveal the chest.

This treasure chest was missable in the SNES version of Super Mario RPG, but the remake appears to keep this one accessible even in the late stages of the game. If there are no toads around, you may need to advance the story a bit before you can grab this chest.

Those are all the chests in the Mushroom Kingdom. Now get back to your adventure!
