Few companies can have such amazing comebacks as Nintendo, much less build an entire business out of them. After a slow start, bad press, and angry shareholders, the 3DS’ health bar is most certainly in the green. No red herbs for you, Nintendo (ha ha, videogame humor).

In 2011, Nintendo sold a combined 12 million hardware units in the United States — 4.5 million Wiis, 3.5 million DS variants, and 4 million 3DS systems. Executive sales and marketing VP Scott Moffitt credits “one of the strongest software lineups of [Nintendo’s] history” as the driving force of this victory.

Super Mario Land 3D and Mario Kart 7 enjoyed success, as both games have become the fastest selling titles in the history of their respective franchises. They have both become the first million sellers for the 3DS, too. Skyward Sword has cleared a million, Mario Kart Wii has cleared eleven million, and New Super Mario Bros. (DS) has cleared ten million.

Obviously, we’re all still convinced that Nintendo is 100% doomed, don’t worry about that!
