[Update: Ubisoft is claiming that, unlike Driver, this game will NOT require a permanent connection after all. It will include some form of extra DRM, but it is yet to detail what shape that will take. Online activation is a given, but we’ll have to wait for further comment to see how far that activation stretches.]

Following yesterday’s news that Driver: San Francisco would see the return of Ubisoft’s hated “always connected” DRM, it’s been discovered that the fairly mediocre (but highly anticipated) From Dust will also need to maintain an Internet connection in order to run.

The discovery was made on From Dust‘s Steam page, which says: “3rd-party DRM: Ubisoft Online Service.” This is the same DRM used by Driver, so we already know what it means. Considering the only thing “online” about From Dust is a bunch of leaderboards on the optional Challenge stages, it’s pretty silly.

Ubisoft’s DRM won it no friends when it first arrived, and the company started to scale it back. Apparently, Ubisoft didn’t learn its lesson or simply doesn’t care about what PC gamers think. Cool.
